for the 2nd screening of Banned Cinema:
Hi**er Youth Quex (Hans Steinhoff, 1933)
Mon, Oct 30 @ 6pm, Dwinelle 33
Currently classified in Germany as a Vorbehaltsfilm, Hi**er Youth Quex (released in the USA under the title "Our Flag Leads Us Forward") cannot be shown outside of closed educational events guided by an expert. The film depicts the story of Heini Völker, a teenage boy nicknamed "Quex" (Quicksilver) by his friends. He lives in poverty in Berlin, in a one-room apartment. The year is 1932 - the depth of the Depression. While Heini's father turns to the Communist Party in the face of this poverty, Heini is drawn in by the Hi**er Youth. This family drama spills out onto the streets, speaking to the street battles between N***s and Communists, which regularly occurred during the Weimar era and setting a course that could only end in tragedy. Before the rise of Leni Riefenstahl, Propaganda Minister Goebbels held up Hi**er Youth Quex as an ideal vehicle for N**i ideology.
