Migraine headaches are common, but many people are unaware that they have them.

Most of the time, these headaches are disabling and effect one’s productivity with school and work.

There are more than 250 thousand people in the U.S. who die each year from sepsis, making this the 3rd most common cause of death in this country behind heart disease and cancer.

The initial symptoms of sepsis can be very subtle and mistaken for many other mild illnesses, which may resolve. But sepsis does not resolve.

04/29/2022

Early detection is the key to successful resolution. Clues to early sepsis do not require sophisticated testing. Rather, abnormal vital signs, like a fast heartbeat, rapid breathing, and an elevated white blood count should raise red flags. Even though these findings may not be specific for sepsis, prompt concern, hospitalization, and the use of antibiotics will make an enormous difference if sepsis turns out to be the right diagnosis.

Typical features include one-sided headaches that are often throbbing and associated with nausea. There may be sensitivity to light, leading many to shut off lights and seek a dark room. In 10% of the cases, there is an aura with flashing lights, dizziness, or malaise before the onset of the headache. But, in the vast majority, this aura is not present and there is only a headache.

It is less stressful on your joints than running and doesn’t require great preparation. I have a patient who lost over 50 pounds during a nine-month period merely by walking 36,000 steps per day. Our iPhones document our daily steps, which is useful to support a goal of achieving 10,000 steps per day.

I like morning walks, it is the ‘road less travelled’ as poet Robert Frost indicated was his choice in life. There is less traffic, the day is quieter and more amenable to creative thoughts, and it gets it out of the way no matter what happens later in the day.

Don't underestimate the power of exercising. All it takes is 30 minutes a day, or even getting out for a walk.
