Seven Luddy students recently returned from the Ghana Tech Trip, a three week service-learning experience led by IU staff and faculty. Luddy partnered with Young At Heart Ghana, an organization that improves digital education access to rural and disadvantaged communities throughout the country, giving Luddy students the opportunity to help local students work with technology in the classroom. 🇬🇭

Professor of Informatics Filippo Radicchi is the new associate editor for Physical Review E, the flagship journal for Complex Networks and Systems research. Two Luddy-sponsored robotics teams made it to the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) World Championships in Houston, Texas, drawing more than 20,000 pre-college science, technology, engineering and math-minded students from around the world to compete. Both teams, I.C.E. Robotics and the Quadrangles, were one of 12 teams hailing from Indiana at the world championships.

Yesterday, the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center hosted The Global Macroscopes: 20th Exhibit Debut at University Collections at McCalla, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Places & Spaces: Mapping Science exhibit.

Over the years, Places & Spaces has appeared at some of the world’s most renowned institutes of knowledge and learning, like the National Academy of Sciences, Stanford University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, University College Dublin, and many more.

Luddy graduate students and faculty recently attended the prestigious ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Honolulu, Hawaii, presenting more than 10 research papers and organizing multiple workshops during the event. CHI, considered the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction, allows researchers and practitioners from around the world to discuss the latest in interactive technology.

Luddy Assistant Professor of Computer Science Luyi Xing has won the 2023-24 Outstanding Junior Faculty Award, the most prestigious campus-level honor available specifically to pre-tenure faculty. The award is designed to identify the most promising untenured, tenure-track faculty and assist them in the development of their scientific, scholarly, or artistic activities.

Students at the Luddy School are improving society through innovative engineering projects, which were featured during this year's school-wide Poster Symposium.

One team of students displayed their VispalExo Exoskeleton Arm brace, an Electromyography-controlled exoskeletal arm brace that enables a person who is paralyzed to move a braced arm. Their project was one of six hour-long Capstone Design final presentations as part of the symposium, with project foci ranging from solar eclipse photography missions, interactive musical experiences, autonomous vehicle designs and more.

The Symposium highlighted Luddy's commitment to hands-on, project-based learning, shaping the future of society-centered engineering and technology.

Cutting-edge vision research presented during the NeurIPS Conference by Luddy professors Justin Wood and Samantha Wood and Ph.D. student Lalit Pandey compares newborn visual systems to that of vision transformers. The research provided the first evidence, Samantha Wood said, that transformers are no more data hungry than newborn brains.

Luddy Associate Professor of Informatics Mary L Gray was recently featured on an episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight, discussing how AI is used to evaluate pay for workers in delivery service apps.

Mary’s research examines how technology access, material conditions, and everyday uses of technologies affects people’s lives, discussing the danger of tying product quality to the amount of pay allotted to workers through service platforms.

This morning, the Luddy School held its annual Graduation Ceremony at the IU Auditorium to recognize the tremendous achievements of our graduating class of 2024. 🎉

Attended by approximately 1,250 undergraduates and graduates and their 2,000 guests, the Luddy School awarded degrees in computer science, informatics, data science, cybersecurity & global policy, intelligent systems engineering, human-computer interaction, information science, library science, bioinformatics, and secure computing.

Our graduating Intelligent Systems Engineering cohort swore into the Order of the Engineer last Friday in recognition of their transition from students to professionals. Worn on the fifth finger of the working hand, the Engineer’s Ring is stainless steel and represents an engineer who has accepted the Obligation of an Engineer in a Ring Ceremony.
