We had the distinct honor of interviewing Kerriann Badal, a Ph.D. student studying Integrative Biology in the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, who is also a National Institute of Health (NIH) F31 Grant recipient. Here is an excerpt from our interview:

GC: Tell us about your educational journey culminating to graduate school at FAU.

KB: I completed my undergraduate degree at FAU. I conducted my undergraduate research in Dr. Stackman’s learning and memory lab. I wanted to continue research after graduating so I joined Dr. Puthanveettil’s neuroscience lab at Scripps Research. I was a research assistant for three years before applying for FAU’s Ph.D. program. During those three years at Scripps I learned so much, and I was able to get two papers published from the work I did. However, I wanted to be able to study learning and memory in a more in-depth way with a greater understanding so I applied to FAU. I applied for the NIH F31 individual predoctoral grant with the intention of improving my grant writing skills. I took the process seriously, but I did not expect to be awarded since this award is highly competitive and quite prestigious. Reading my score and realizing that my application scored within the top 1 percentile was an unbelievable moment. The award provides me with a competitive stipend, tuition, and most importantly, time to devote to my dissertation research.

GC: How would you describe your graduate experience at FAU?

KB: FAU’s Jupiter campus is a neuroscience hub with outstanding research at three brilliant institutes (FAU, Scripps, and the Max Planck Florida Institute). It is a neuroscience student’s dream! Everyone is very supportive of the students and are open to scientific ideas. My graduate experience has been wonderful.

GC: Have you been involved with any extracurricular actives while in grad school?

KB: I enjoy sharing knowledge through outreach activities at FAU and Scripps. I also like stargazing and gaming (unofficially) with my colleagues.

GC: What does life after grad school look like for you?

KB: After graduation I plan to join a lab for my postdoc to enhance my trainings in microscopy and electrophysiology. My career goal is to study learning and memory in my own neuroscience lab.

GC: What advice would you give to students, of any level, knowing what you now know.

KB: Love what you do and it will love you back. If you can love your research even when everything is going horribly wrong, then you are in the right field. There is nothing I would rather do than investigate learning and memory. Graduate school can be difficult sometimes but don’t give up and always remember to have guilt-free fun to balance the stress.
