Good luck this weekend to our Ontario community 4H kids at the Malheur County Fair!

The fair celebrates youth from around the area, several hundred livestock animals, and show exhibits.

For many months, these young people have dedicated themselves to the hard work and thoughtful management of their livestock, honoring the traditions of the local community.

Saint Alphonsus is proud to support the Malheur Cattlemen’s Steer Sale at the fair, and we hope to see you there!

“The past is no longer yours; the future is not yet in your power. You have only the present wherein to do good.” - Saint Alphonsus Liguori.

On today’s Feast of Saint Alphonsus, we honor and celebrate his work to bring the Spirit of the Gospel to the poor, as well as reflecting on how it aligns with our core value of commitment to those experiencing poverty.

What good will you do today?

In Eastern Oregon, we want to extend our deepest thanks to the brave fire crews who have responded to the Durkee and Cow Valley fires! We are incredibly grateful for your selflessness and professionalism.

To our community, every act of kindness, no matter how small, has made a significant impact to those in harm’s way.

Whether you offered words of encouragement, provided necessary supplies, or simply kept our neighbors in your thoughts and prayers, we are deeply grateful. Your support reminds us of the strength and unity of our community.

In times of crisis, it is the collective effort of individuals coming together that makes all the difference.

We are humbled and honored to be part of such a caring and resilient community.

As we move forward together, we will continue to work tirelessly to support those in need, inspired by the incredible example of compassion and solidarity we have witnessed.

Meet Zeus!

Zeus is 2 years old Labrador Retriever and has been working for 14 months at the hospital's main campus in Boise as a security dog with therapy certifications.

He works alongside his owner, Protection Officer and K9 Handler Jeffrey Jayne.

Zeus loves coming in first thing in the morning to greet all the protection officers in the office, followed by a trip to the ambulance bay.

Don't forget about his other favorite spot on campus - the cafeteria. You'll spot Zeus wagging his tail and patiently waiting for a dog treat.

Have you met Zeus yet?

Eastern Oregon is fighting as a region against the country’s largest fires this year, and in times like these, there is remarkable strength in community.

In Baker City, we are honored and proud to work alongside resilient community partners who have been working tirelessly to connect community members with the resources they need.

Rural volunteer firefighters and local volunteers, along with local agencies, organizations, and colleagues are connecting community members with resources daily.

A special thank you to Pharmacy Manager Shannon Smock pictured below who saw a need and advocated for it.

“We have seen our community come together time and again for both small and widespread times of need and want to be a part of that,” Smock said. “We saw a need from our amazing community fighting the wildfires and knew our hospital would be able to help support that need in the form of essential hygiene and first aid items.”

Donations of much-needed supplies went to the area's rural firefighters.

Your community spirit is incredible, Baker City!

For our colleagues, today marks the start of Mission Week.

What does that mean?

“Mission week is an opportunity for us as an organization to celebrate our mission, our core values -- our legacy. It’s a moment where we can pause and celebrate our culture and recommit to living it out daily,” Mission Leader Ted Marconi said.

Our colleagues in Boise, Nampa and Eastern Oregon had the chance to get an early start on the week as they welcomed Corinne Francis, Trinity Health Executive Vice President and Chief Mission Integration Officer.

Keep an eye out this week as we share what it means to live out our mission as we serve together in the spirit of the Gospel and check out all of the smiling faces below!

Staying Safe in Extreme Heat and Wildfire Smoke 07/22/2024

When was the last time you hydrated?

Triple digit weather puts us all at a greater risk of heat related illness, not to mention the regional wildfires that increase respiratory illness.

This week drink that extra glass of water, limit time outdoors during peak heat, and be sure to check in on your friends and family.

Share this with a someone who could use the reminder!

And, check out what Dr. Aaron Campbell had to share with KBOI this week on how to keep safe in the heat.

After the courageous care that first responders provided to patients during a time of crisis last March, Shauna and Deputy Randy Krantz knew they wanted to find a way to show their support.

Yesterday, they hand-delivered sweet treats of appreciation to our Emergency Department colleagues in honor of their daily work caring for first responders and families across the Treasure Valley.

“We are forever grateful for the highly trained doctors, nurses and staff at Saint Alphonsus that care for our first responders, in what could be the most frightening time of their life, as well as their families," Shauna Krantz shared.

“We wanted to recognize the hardworking staff and say thank you for treating our blue family like your own, with the best care possible. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. Keep up the amazing work.”

Thank you to Shauna from Holland's Bites and Brews, Sea State Coffee, Gaston's Bakery, and The Chef’s Store Meridian for their generous donations to support our team!

And a huge thank you to the tireless work of our emergency responders!

When 11 in 100 female Idahoans will die from breast cancer within five years of diagnosis – we know prevention matters.

This week, we partnered with Stampede for the Cure at the Snake River Stampede where more than $100,000 in funds were raised in the fight against breast cancer!

“Idaho ranks 50th in the nation in breast cancer screenings,” shared Clint Child, President of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center Nampa and President of the Snake River Stampede Board of Directors.

“The Stampede for the Cure really found that there is a big gap in preventative screenings, and we need to close it. It's important to not only Saint Alphonsus, but to the community.”

Breast Cancer Center Manager Heidi Bourget has seen the need and strong community health partnership that provides screening and diagnostic breast care services to those underserved women in the community.

“We graciously thank the Stampede for their generosity in providing funding for those women who may not get the critical screening and diagnostic exams if the funds were not available to them,” she said last night.

Take a look at the photo recap from all the fun yesterday at Pink on the Dirt and Pink Night at the rodeo.

To continuing the fight against breast cancer!

Back to school is around the corner, and for many young athletes, it can also mean a time of greater risk for sports-related injuries.

Matt Irwin, a talented young quarterback, sustained a fractured shoulder blade while playing football for Owyhee High School.

During a tackle, he landed forcefully on his right side, resulting in the injury.

Dr. Derek Kunz oversaw his treatment, opting for conservative sports medicine management to allow the bone to heal naturally, followed by a tailored a comprehensive rehabilitation program.

The result — restored strength and mobility to Irwin's shoulder and a return to the field in optimal health and performance.

Watch the video to learn more about his journey to healing.

From local to national, we are celebrating!

On June 28, Apogee Physicians, the largest entirely physician-owned and operated Hospitalist group in the nation, named President of Eastern Oregon Dina Ellwanger “CEO of the Year” and Program Director for Saint Alphonsus Medical Director-Ontario Hospitalist Services Dr. Augustine Okeke “Program Director of the Year."

This award recognizes high-performing providers from more than 30 states who consistently demonstrate success from patient satisfaction to recruitment and readmissions.

“Dina was honored for her long history of dedication to Apogee patients and providers. Apogee is in its 13th year in Ontario, in great part because of the culture that Dina has built,” said Apogee Division 1 President Dr. Dennis Klein.

Dina shared in celebrating Dr. Okeke.

“During this past year, Dr. Okeke not only maintained the established program at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario but was very crucial in the onboarding of the new program at another Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Baker City,” she said.

Join us in celebrating them both!

Carrie Zanders had just celebrated a milestone 25-year anniversary with Saint Alphonsus when she passed away unexpectedly on December 23, 2023.

Carrie began her career with Saint Alphonsus in the Cancer Center and had recently been promoted to a Trinity System Office position as a Community Benefit Analyst, a position largely created with her expertise in mind.

Along with being known for her kind heart and service, Carrie was well-known for her art. The walls of Carrie’s office were often adorned with her favorite art pieces, and she took great care in gifting paintings to her friends and colleagues.

Carrie served on the jury to select artists for the Saint Alphonsus art wall in recent years, helping friends and colleagues to display their art, and it was her dream to paint enough pieces in 2024 to submit her own art for hanging in the halls of Saint Alphonsus as well.

During the month of July, we proudly pay tribute to Carrie’s creativity and generous spirit by displaying her art.

Take a walk down the hall this month to share in her legacy.
