🎉 Exciting news! The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) bill has passed the Senate! This important legislation will enhance access to essential communication tools and technologies for students with autism and other disabilities who are non-speaking or have limited speech.
A heartfelt thank you to sponsor Senator O'Connor, Senate Ways and Means Chair Rodrigues, and Senate President Spilka and cosponsors for their leadership, as well as House Sponsor Representative Barber!

MAC's own Johanne Pino, Project Outreach and Training Coordinator, was recognized with the Unsung Hero Award at the Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative (MAICEI) Emerging Trends 2024 Conference! Johanne has been working behind-the-scenes to support inclusive higher education in our state since 2007. We truly appreciate her dedication and deep commitment to education equity for youth with intellectual disabilities and autism. Congratulations, Johanne!
When the breakthrough higher education bill was signed into law in 2022, Massachusetts became the first state in the country to ensure all state colleges and universities include students with intellectual disabilities and autism. At the Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative (MAICEI) Emerging Trends 2024 Conference yesterday, several leaders were recognized for playing instrumental roles in passage of the higher education law.
The conference recognized Senate Ways and Means Chair Michael J. Rodrigues, who played a critical role in passing the higher education law. Because of his commitment and strong leadership, public colleges are now required to offer inclusive opportunities, opening doors for students with intellectual disabilities and autism to fully participate in higher education with their non-disabled peers.
Legislative and Policy Director for Chair Rodrigues, Jeremy Spittle, received the Unsung Hero Award for his key role in supporting Chair Rodrigues. Mr. Spittle worked tirelessly gathering vital input from the community and using his exceptional skills to support the Chair in building consensus among stakeholders. Both Mr. Spittle and Chair Rodrigues were pivotal in the decade-long advocacy to pass the higher education law, and we are beyond grateful for their leadership.
MAC wouldn’t be able to do the work we do without the vibrant advocacy community that we’re part of. Congratulations Chair Rodrigues and Jeremy Spittle, and thank you for continuing to advocate tirelessly for more inclusive opportunities for youth with disabilities in our state! 👏
We had an amazing time at the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Access to Justice Awards Celebration last week! Our Senior Project Director, Julia Landau, received the Lifetime Achievement Award which recognized the lasting impact of her advocacy in closing the opportunity and achievement gaps for students with disabilities. We’re so grateful to have her leadership as MAC continues to ensure that students with disabilities are learning in inclusive classrooms with the services they need, that students with disabilities of color are accessing equitable opportunities, and that newly arrived students are entering schools across the state with the supports they need to thrive.
Congratulations, Julia, and all of this year’s honorees! And thank you to the MBA for this wonderful recognition.
MAC is thrilled to announce that Julia Landau, Senior Project Director of the Disability Education Justice Initiative and Autism Center, will be recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bar Association at the upcoming Access to Justice Award Celebration!
As an expert in special education law and exceptional policy advocate, Julia has worked on multiple major legislative campaigns including the overhaul of the state special education law, transition rights of older students, the establishment of rights and services for children with autism, and assistive technology. Most recently, she spearheaded MAC's efforts to pass the first-in-the-nation higher education law for students with autism and intellectual disabilities. She is a fearless advocate and mentor, and we are so grateful for the impact of decades of her leadership and vision at MAC... and for all that is to come!
