๐Omar Taweh โ24 has been working to support refugees, pursuing emergency medicine, and advocating for social justice. Before attending UMass Chan Medical School Taweh lived in Jordan on a Fulbright student research scholarship, working with Syrian and Palestinian refugees at the biggest refugee camp in Jordan. This experience led him to discover his love for medicine and inspired him to apply to medical school.
Taweh shares, โI want to learn not only why my patient broke their foot, but why they kept walking on it after it was broken. If itโs connected to their socioeconomic status, Iโve suddenly uncovered a whole bucket of worms. The emergency department isnโt going to solve that right away, but itโs at least the place where we can document its presence and make patients feel safe.โ
Taweh currently works as the director of communications for the Worcester Refugee Assistance Project (WRAP) and volunteers with the IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services. In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we're proud to highlight our very own Chanda Wolf and her new book, "A Dozen Delicious Donuts: A Sweet Cambodian-American Story." ๐
A working mother of two and now author, Chanda is a Cambodian-American whose personal journey and family history fuels her passion for elevating the voices of immigrants and refugees through storytelling.
As the daughter of genocide survivors, Chanda uses storytelling to keep her family and country's rich heritage and culture alive by passing on traditions to her children, shedding light on the harrowing truths of Cambodia's killing fields, and fostering a sense of pride to be Cambodian.
Chanda hopes to convey the beauty and strength of Cambodian culture, which has been underrepresented. Chanda's children's book hits shelves this Fall and is available for presale on Amazon.
