Looking for a way to give back AND listen to beautiful music? The Port Ludlow Community Church will present a benefit concert featuring cellist Pamela Roberts and pianist Sung-Ling Hsu, both of whom have played with the Bremerton WestSound Symphony.
The concert is free with donations accepted at the door to benefit Apple of His Eye Charity in Rwanda. Tickets are not required and seating is limited. There will be a short reception after the concert.
Apple of His Eye Charity is a nonprofit that provides holistic care to Rwandans through a sponsorship program and other projects such as water wells, housing, vocational training, counseling and nutritional programs. Donations from the concert will help the nonprofit build a recreational playground for young students and their families.
βThis benefit concert is a wonderful reason to come together and to be reminded of how blessed we are in so many ways,β said Pastor Kevin Hall. "Pam and Sung-Ling have planned a beautiful, international program for us to enjoy as we collectively support this worthy Rwandan project."
The duo will perform the Cello Sonata No. 2 in A minor, Op. 81 by Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881 - 1950). This sonata was written in 1948 shortly after and in direct response to the famous Resolution on Music issued after WWII by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1947 Myaskovsky was singled out, along with Shostakovich, Khachaturian and Prokofiev, as one of the principal offenders in writing music of anti-Soviet, 'anti-proletarian' tendencies. Myaskovsky refused to take part in the proceedings, which attempted to control the style of music Soviet composers could produce.

After a national search, the Bremerton Symphony Association (BSA) is pleased to welcome Juan Gallastegui as the next Executive Director, beginning July 2024. He replaces Thom Mayes, who served as interim Executive Director for the organization since 2023. Gallastegui will move to the area from Medford, Oregon, where he is currently serving as Operations Manager for the Rogue Valley Symphony.
Juan Gallastegui is a seasoned musician, conductor, and administrator, boasting over twenty-five years of experience in the music industry. Beginning his career as a musician, he honed his skills performing in wind ensembles in Spain. Upon relocating to the US, he dedicated eight years to teaching and conducting various organizations in the Washington DC/MD area, overseeing significant productions with symphony orchestras and symphonic bands. In his administrative roles, Gallastegui has held leadership positions in multiple organizations across Europe and the US.
"Juan is eminently qualified to be our new Executive Director and an amazing find." Connie Lord, BSA Board President, states. "With the full endorsement of our Board of Directors, we are excited to present him to Kitsap County as the new face of the BSA."
Gallastegui will oversee all administrative and financial operations of the nonprofit, partnering with Music Director Alan Futterman, Chorale Director LeeAnne Campos, and Youth Jazz program Director Derick Polk. He steps into the role as the orchestra begins its 82nd season of music.

Gustav Theodore Holst (born Gustavus Theodore von Holst; 21 September 1874 β 25 May 1934) was an English composer, arranger and teacher. Best known for his orchestral suite The Planets, he composed many other works across a range of genres, although none achieved comparable success. His distinctive compositional style was the product of many influences, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss being most crucial early in his development. The subsequent inspiration of the English folksong revival of the early 20th century, and the example of such modern composers as Maurice Ravel, led Holst to develop and refine an individual style.
There were professional musicians in the previous three generations of Holst's family and it was clear from his early years that he would follow the same calling. He hoped to become a pianist, but was prevented by neuritis in his right arm. Despite his father's reservations, he pursued a career as a composer, studying at the Royal College of Music under Charles Villiers Stanford. Unable to support himself by his compositions, he played the trombone professionally and later became a teacherβa great one, according to his colleague Ralph Vaughan Williams. Among other teaching activities he built up a strong tradition of performance at Morley College, where he served as musical director from 1907 until 1924, and pioneered music education for women at St Paul's Girls' School, where he taught from 1905 until his death in 1934. He was the founder of a series of Whitsun music festivals, which ran from 1916 for the remainder of his life.
Holst's works were played frequently in the early years of the 20th century, but it was not until the international success of The Planets in the years immediately after the First World War that he became a well-known figure. A shy man, he did not welcome this fame, and preferred to be left in peace to compose & teach. In his later years his uncompromising, personal style of composition struck many music lovers as too austere, & his brief popularity declined. Apart from The Planets & a handful of other works, his music was generally neglected until the 1980s, when recordings of much of his output became available.
