HAUNTED CEMETERIES
Today we visited the Buena Vista Cemetery in beautiful Port Gamble, Washington. The cemetery is on a hill overlooking the Hood Canal and historic Port Gamble. We visit this cemetery often. The site is peaceful, beautiful, and historic. This got me thinking about the concept of haunted cemeteries.
When I think of haunted locations, cemeteries are not on my list. This is my thinking and my personal opinion. If I wake up dead and find myself standing in a morgue, mortuary, or cemetery, the first thing I would do is high-tail it out of there to someplace familiar. I would want to visit my loved ones, and places that have meaning in my life. Mortuaries, cemeteries, and places of the dead are not familiar. I would not see any reason to start hanging out in such a place. That does not mean there may not be a reason for me to visit.
I have had experiences in cemeteries and will share a couple quick personal experiences to help illustrate.
A couple years ago we were in Tracyton Cemetery, looking for a specific grave for the Find-A-Grave website. While we were there, we met the trustee of the cemetery. He told us about a local Boy Scout troupe who volunteered to do some maintenance and general cleanup and what an amazing job they did making the cemetery the beautiful place it is today. The cemetery was awarded a grant to clean up some historic headstones. Most of the headstones have been cleaned and you can read the names and dates easily. The names on the graves are familiar names. Many of our streets are named after the people who are buried there. While we were talking, out of the corner of my eye, I saw an old woman listening to us. When I turned to face her, she was not there. I had a psychic impression that she was grateful for the visitors and for being remembered.
When I was a child we were at the cemetery where my family members are buried. I saw a young woman crying at a grave. I grabbed my mom and asked her if she saw the young woman. We were the only people in that section of the cemetery.
The old woman at the Tracyton Cemetery was showing gratitude for the care of their resting place, and for being honored. The young woman may have charged the location with a strong emotional attachment, or is still visiting to grieve. To me, it would be doubtful that either the old woman or the grieving young woman would be haunting the cemetery. The old woman was visiting to say thank you and the young woman might just be a reflection of the past, like a snapshot of a moment caught in time, or was visiting the grave of a loved one. It doesn’t make sense they would have some intent to haunt a cemetery.
I have heard that people who are spiritually open attract spirits. Spirits recognize it as a chance to communicate and a chance to tell their story. Or perhaps intuitive people might recognize what others do not. Either way, it is something to consider. As I said we don’t know for sure.
This is a fun topic to discuss. Have you had an experience in a cemetery? Please share your story in the comments below.

EVP BEST PRACTICES
We get a lot of questions about how we do investigations. One of the most common questions is about obtaining EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena.
The concept of asking questions and waiting for a response is not new. Before modern recording equipment, the exercise was referred to as “call and response”. An investigator would ask a question. Then they would be very quiet and listen for a response. Some of the techniques came from old methods of divination, like using a candle flame by determining a direction for yes and no, then watching the flame for responses to yes/no questions. Today we use digital recorders to ask a series of questions, then play the recording back to hear potential responses. The theory is these recorders are highly sensitive and may pick up sounds that we do not necessarily catch in the moment with our own ears. This is a highly effective tool if used properly.
I will lay out some best practices for using digital recorders in what we call an EVP session. This list is not all-inclusive, and I cannot emphasize enough to let the evidence guide the investigation. In other words, be open-minded.
1. Use a digital recorder, not a cell phone. If you are using a digital recorder you can save the file. The file can be imported into a commercial sound program. The file can be marked where the possible response is. This will help you find it quickly without listening to the entire recording. You will also have the ability to clean up any background noises and isolate words from sounds.
2. All EVP sessions should be identified on the recorder before asking any questions – for example, We start the recorder and say “EVP Session - March 15, 2023, 1 am, Northeast master bedroom of Jones residence. The weather is clear with a light breeze.”
3. Introduce yourself and others in the group, set intention then include control questions. Control questions help you determine if you are getting intelligent responses as opposed to just words or sentences that are disconnected. For example, “Hello, my name is Bob and I am with Mary, Linda, and Bryan. We are here to visit with you. We are curious about you. We do not mean any harm and will not ask you to do anything other than communicate with us. What is your name?… Are you always here or do you come and go?… Are you a member of the Jones family?.... Do you have a message for someone?… I introduced myself, what is my name? or another control question like what color shirt is Mary wearing? ALWAYS wait long enough for a response before asking another question.
4. Only ask a few questions, then play the recorder back. Let the evidence guide the investigation. If you are investigating the Jones residence do not assume any spirits are related to the Jones family, ask. We have seen on TV programs and when leading public investigations people asking questions based on what they believe the history of the location is. Personally, I do not want to know the history, rather let the evidence prove the history or go in a completely different direction. Learning the history at the end of the investigation brings new light to the evidence. Use your time wisely.
5. When you are finished with the session, thank spirit. Show gratitude for being allowed to visit. Always be polite. Never provoke or try to force responses. If someone did that to you, you would either ignore them or respond in anger.
6. You may wish to draw yourself a map so you can identify or mark where you heard noises or responses. Always try to debunk or figure out where noises came from. Not everything is paranormal. Your map will help you return to the spot to do more investigating.
Our best advice is to relax and enjoy yourself. Keep it light and friendly. If you are overly nervous, frightened, or speak in a rude manner it will be reflected in the quality of the responses or whether you get any.

What are Shadow People?
The Wikipedia definition is “A shadow person (also known as a shadow figure or black mass) is the perception of a patch of shadow as a living, humanoid figure, and interpreted as the presence of a spirit or other entity by believers in the paranormal or supernatural”.
We have all seen depictions of shadow people on the paranormal TV shows. Usually an intensely black humanoid figure. So, what are shadow people, and are they different from other ghostly manifestations? Are shadow people a unique paranormal phenomena or entities unto themselves? Are shadow people simply the result of physiological or psychological conditions such as sleep paralysis, sleep deprivation, or a chemical imbalance? Are shadow people just a trick of the mind such as pareidolia?
The truth is we don’t know. There is no scientific research to support or refute the phenomena. The paranormal community is all over the map with this. I have heard opinions from spirits attempting to manifest to malevolent entities/demons.
Have you seen a shadow person? I have seen shadows, but none that meet the description of an intensely black humanoid figure, and certainly none that I felt had an agenda unto themselves.
I will remain curious and open minded. What are your experiences with shadow people? Let us know in the comments below.
