Friends, in today’s Gospel (Luke 4:16–30), Jesus begins his Galilean ministry with a prophetic message in the synagogue at Nazareth: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.”
The moment has arrived, the privileged time, the kairos; something that human beings have been longing for and striving after and hoping to see has appeared. In Jesus of Nazareth, the divine and human have come together in a salvific way, and this reconciliation is the long-awaited kingdom of God.
One motif in Scripture is persistent: the passionate desire for deliverance, the cry of the heart toward the God from whom the people feel alienated. What Jesus announces in his first sermon, and what he demonstrates throughout his life and ministry, is that this wild desire of his ancestors, this hope against hope, this intimate union of God and humanity, is an accomplished fact, something that can be seen and heard and touched.
Happy Labor Day!

When King Wamba's hunters pursued and shot at the deer, the arrow wounded St. Giles instead, making him the patron of cripples. As compensation, the King gave Giles a piece of land in the Provence, on which Giles founded a monastery. He died with the highest repute for sanctity and miracles.

Friends, in today’s Gospel (Mark 7:1–8, 14–15, 21–23), Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, who imposed their interpretation of the Law on the Israelites. Keep in mind that the first Christians and the writers of the first Christian documents were all Jews, or at least people formed by a Jewish thought world. They made sense of Jesus in terms of what were, to them, the Scriptures.
Jesus himself was an observant Jew, and the themes and images of the Holy Scriptures were elemental for him. And he presented himself as the one who would not undermine the Law and the prophets but fulfill them.
All of those social and religious conventions that had effectively divided Israel, he sought to overcome and to expose as fraudulent. He reached out to everyone: rich and poor, healthy and sick, saints and sinners. And he embodied the obedience of Israel: “I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me”; “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me.”

Friends, today’s Gospel (Matthew 25:14–30) gives us the challenging parable of the talents. A man goes on a journey, but before leaving he entrusts his money to three of his servants. To one he gives five talents, to a second, two, and to a third, one.
The first man trades with the five talents. The second does the same, and both receive a rich return on their investment. The third man cautiously buries his talent. When the owner returns, he praises the first two servants and gives them greater responsibilities, but the third man he upbraids.
Jesus loved to use examples drawn from the world of business. And he especially liked this dynamic of investment as a model of the spiritual life. The reason is clear: God exists in gift form. Therefore, if you want his life in you, you have to learn to give it away. Think of the talents as everything that we’ve received from God—life, breath, being, powers. Because they come from God, they are meant to become gifts. If you cling to them, in the manner of the third servant, they don’t grow; in fact, they wither away.

Saint Raymond Nonnatus
1204-1240
Feast Day: August 31
Patronage: Midwives, children, especially newborns, pregnant mother, the falsely accused, fever sufferers, and obstetricians
Saint Raymond’s mother died during childbirth and he was delivered by C-section, thus the name Nonnatus (meaning not born). He was a well-educated noble, called to the priesthood and entered the Mercedarians (who ransomed slaves) under St. Peter Nolasco. On a mission to Algeria, ransoming slaves, he ran out of money and offered himself for others and was imprisoned. While in prison, he converted Muslims, angering his captors, who then bored a hole through his lips and attached a padlock to keep him from preaching. Eventually, Raymond was ransomed and returned to Spain, where he died.

The Greater East Buffalo Family of Parishes is offering a special opportunity to explore their former parish school buildings on September 14th. Visitors are invited to tour these sites including the former St. Adalbert School, now home to the Response to Love Center. Afterwards, there will be a rosary hour and Mass. Everyone is welcome!
I am pleased to report that productive meetings with families of parishes, which began more than two weeks ago, realized 52 family counter proposals made to a diocesan review committee. Following the counter proposal meetings, our diocesan review panel reviewed those counter proposals and then recommendations were presented for consultation with the Presbyteral Council which is an advisory body to me. The Diocese is now evaluating changes to our initial recommendation of mergers and closures in 26 of our 36 families of parishes.
Additional time is needed to work through these changes and final announcements will not be made on September 1, but will be coming later next week, or early the following week.
I appreciate the patience of our faithful as we work diligently to decide on the future number of parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo. As always, you remain in my prayers, and I ask for your prayers as well.
-Bishop Michael W. Fisher
Monday, September 2, 2024 is Labor Day. We pray and thank all those laborers who work and assist in helping us in our day to day activities. Mass will be celebrated on Labor Day at 8:00 am at St. Stanislaus Church, Buffalo, NY.
Friends, our Gospel today (Matthew 25:1–13) is the parable that compares the kingdom of heaven with “ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.” This is an image borrowed from the customs of the time. The bridesmaids would wait for the groom and, upon his appearance, accompany him.
Well, this is the Christian community, waiting for Christ the groom to arrive. Did Jesus tell this parable because he knew that his Church would be in for a long period of waiting?
We are wise in our waiting if we pray on a regular basis; if we educate ourselves in the faith; if we participate in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist; if we perform the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; if we become people of love. We are foolish in our waiting if we neglect these things.
And here is one of the hardest truths of this parable: the divine life, so cultivated, cannot simply be shared with another at the last minute. The wise virgins are not being difficult and self-absorbed when they tell their friends that they can’t help them. A saint can’t simply infuse his life into another; it just doesn’t work that way.
