Meet Julia Hunt (BS '17), director of digital fabrication and clinical assistant professor, who fosters a culture of making in our school’s fabrication workshop.
At the intersection of creativity and technology, Julia’s fascination with the marriage of form and function began in part due to her family history. Essentially a third-generation shop teacher, both Julia’s father and grandfather were high school shop instructors.
As the Director of Digital Fabrication, Julia is responsible for all of the digital tools in the shop, running external jobs, training students, managing the digital fabrication fellows, maintenance, and more. On top of that, she teaches a course every semester—shaping the future of our city of makers.
Learn more about the growing demand for skilled designers that can bridge the gap between design and fabrication—and how Julia helps our students adapt in leading-edge facilities: https://archplan.buffalo.edu/news/2024/culture-of-making-julia-hunt.html?

Throughout the twentieth century, the Buffalo/Niagara region was host to a variety of boats constructed of wooden hulls powered by internal combustion engines. The geometries that allowed these boats to move efficiently through the water consisted of simple linear pieces of wood or sheets of plywood skins wrapped around structural frames. This semester, our Juniors will consider the long-term advantage to the environment of promoting the return to the use of wood, a sustainable and renewable resource, for the construction of boats!
Each studio produces two boats with seating for two, culminating in a regatta at Gallagher Beach — being held Friday 9/27, rain date Monday 9/30. The intent of this full-scale construction is to facilitate students’ understanding of the relationship between structure and envelope, how to construct an object of complex geometry, and learn how to work in teams.
Skippers race the length of the beach, then pass off the paddles to the next pair of skippers. The first studio to have both boats complete the regatta route will win the Keelson Award.

Twelve students recently participated in a 9-week summer program, led by Miguel Guitart, associate professor of the Department of . Based in Madrid, the students traveled to major cities in the country every week, visited dozens of buildings through two drawing seminars, and designed a UB cultural campus.
This is the sixth edition of the program in Spain. Guitart notes this is an incredible opportunity for students, saying, “students expand their first-hand knowledge on extraordinary examples of architecture. The group explores the country extensively, exposing them to a different culture and incredible buildings. Their experience as a group is also remarkable. Bonds and friendships are formed for life in many cases."

As processed foods encroach upon the Himalayan region of Kashmir, the University at Buffalo is taking a creative approach to raise awareness about haak (hāk), an Indigenous green with centuries of history. Partnering with renowned Kashmiri poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef, they’re launching a public health campaign to highlight this nutritious and culturally significant kale.
The UB Food Systems Planning and Healthy Communities Lab is collaborating with Sher-i-Kashmir Agricultural University of Science and Technology to preserve and promote haak, which is rich in antioxidants and has served as a nutritional safety net in times of conflict.
Despite its benefits, haak is losing ground to hyper-processed foods among younger generations. To counter this, Zareef’s poem, “Haake Naame,” beautifully captures haak’s essence and its importance to Kashmiri life.

Our Story
Embedded in our urban contexts here and around the world, we are architecture and planning hands on, full scale, all in. As a community of thought leaders and aspiring architects and urban planners, we think and act on the edge of knowledge and practice, guided by a culture of experimentation, a core belief in learning by doing, and a spirit of public service and inclusion. We prove every day that design and planning are agents of change for community, place, culture, social justice and the natural world.
The University at Buffalo's School of Architecture and Planning is the only school of architecture and planning within the 64-campus State University of New York (SUNY) system. We invite you to learn more about the life and programs of the school.
The School of Architecture and Planning was created half a century ago as a direct challenge to orthodox design education. We live those original principles today, committed to architecture and planning as interdisciplinary problem-solving enterprises, rooted in social engagement, nourished by research-in-practice, animated by making and doing, and committed to meeting the needs of clients, communities, and society in an increasingly complex urban world.
Throughout half a century of work, the people of the School of Architecture and Planning have grappled with how to make cities more livable and humane; how to conserve and produce energy within the urban fabric; how to make every environment more accessible to people of all abilities; and how to innovate the processes, materials and modes of design and making that improve the aesthetic, cultural, economic and ecological conditions of our built environment.
