An ode to The Boss of Cross:
The first time I became aware of John Roden was in 1998 while middling in the Ski Tamarac Mountain Bike Race. I was struggling through a little creek crossing and this gazelle of a man comes striding past me on a drop bar Cannondale cyclocross bike… I had never seen such a feat first hand, especially at a mountain bike race.
10 years later coming out of bike race retirement, several of my co-workers and I decided to follow Justin Plinz and try out a cyclocross race. This was 2009 at Kissing Bridge. John was, of course, at the center of that race promotion/creation. We had a blast… I took second to last. The rest was history. I was hooked.
The next year we decided to put on a race in Delaware Park with the help of and use of all his cyclocross-specific gear. Cross in the Park was born… Not possible without John’s contribution and investment into the sport and our local cycling scene.
There would be no WNY Cyclocross if it weren’t for John Roden. A sport that has given me so much. The majority of my friends, a reason to live healthier and strive to catch these freaking fast old guys we befriended(lol), a return to mountain bike racing, a career in race promotion & founding a 501c3, my wife (who I met at a John Roden Inc. event.) the list goes on.
So, thank you John Roden. You changed my life for the better. You changed so many peoples lives for the better. I am eternally grateful. God speed….

What is a brevet? A brevet is a non competitive timed distance ride. There is no winner, but in order to be considered a finisher you must finish with maximum elapsed time or 13.5 hours for the 200K and 6.25 hours for the 100K. Along the route you will be asked to take pictures of your bike at locations called “controls”. Sort of set-route-bike-orienteering. Both routes leave Campus at 8 am.

Just dropped a new video of my GoPro footage from the single speed race at Cyclocross Nationals in Louisville, KY. Gives a good perspective of the course. I just included one full lap along with some additional highlights. You can only listen to me gasping for air for so long… lol. Give it a watch over on our YouTube Channel: Campus TV. Riding bikes and making friends!
