Emergency Organizing Meeting: Cambridge Arts and 2019 Elections

Hey Cambridge Arts Folks,

We all know that the arts in Cambridge are not a priority for city funding. As many of you have read, EMF closed recently due to redevelopment. Now, Green Street Studios is scheduled to close at the end of October. These are tragic losses to the Cambridge arts community - And this trend is speeding up, not slowing down.

This constitutes an emergency. In response, artists and community members are meeting Monday, October 14, 6PM at Green Street Studios to discuss and organize for meaningful political action to support the arts.

Nadeem Mazen, former Cambridge City Councilor 2013-2017, will share a proven formula for effective organizing and speak to prior arts organizing successes.

Nate Fillmore will share how Cambridge Bike Safety achieved great successes with these tactics in their fight for bike lanes and an overall shift in policymaking on the issue in Cambridge.

Ben Simon, of the Cambridge Artist Coalition, will share the experiences of organizers during the EMF building sale and closure.

We’ll ask for your priorities, needs, and observations as a community of artists and supporters. We'll begin to identify a group of 5-10 committed folks who want to organize and inform the rest of us, regularly.

Voter registration ends Tuesday. Our overall effort we will only succeed if we show Cambridge that the arts community votes too. Please come prepared to register to vote (or do it in advance of Monday’s meeting, here https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/).

Feel free to bring food for a potluck. Definitely, bring friends and neighbors. This doesn't work if you aren’t there.

An Important Announcement: Green Street Studios to Close its Doors

Cambridge, MA. - October 2, 2019 Green Street Studios is closing after 28 incredible years of serving the dance and arts community in Cambridge and greater Boston. Green Street Studios is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization that fulfills its mission to empower artists to create, explore, and showcase ideas that enhance the vibrancy of our community through affordable rehearsal space and accessible, innovative programming. Each year, GSS has welcomed over 5000 community members to our Central Square studios and Black Box Theater for performances, classes, rehearsals, artist residencies, and more.

Green Street Studios is thriving both artistically and financially. Following a turn-around initiated in 2016, exponential growth has continued under current leadership. Despite this success, GSS cannot sustain a significant rent increase brought by new ownership of the building. Tragically, the increase reflects the prohibitive cost to operate in the Central Square Cultural Arts District and broader Cambridge.

The last day of regular operations will be October 27, 2019. We invite community members to celebrate the legacy of Green Street Studios by renting space, taking classes, and attending performances. A special Benefit Class Series will take place October 18-20. Please check our website and social media in the coming weeks for the schedule and other important updates.

Upon closure, GSS will join the ranks of other non-profit arts organizations (i.e., EMF and Out of the Blue Too Gallery) which have been forced to close or relocate in recent years due to prohibitive operating costs in Central Square. The City of Cambridge is aware of the untenable costs, but is neither actively preserving nor offering support to keep cultural arts institutions in Cambridge.

Get involved. We encourage you to lend your support to existing arts organizations. If the arts have enriched your life, please advocate for meaningful arts funding and protection in Cambridge.

Longtime GSS faculty member and Artistic Director of EgoArt, Inc, Nicole Pierce returns to Green Street Studios for a guest class. Pierce's conducts a thorough warm up focusing on healthy alignment, lubricating the joints, increasing strength, stability, flexibility, long lines and mental acuity. A hybrid of influences including ballet and contemporary forms, Pierce's movement is inventive and textural with emphasis on clear detail, musicality and rhythm. The movement tends toward lush and sinuous contrasted with stark juxtaposition and athletic break outs. Now living in NYC, Pierce has over 20 years experience teaching and choreographing for contemporary dance, theater and opera.

Try something new this Monday! Our GSS $5 Feature is BACK, with Noche Latina Dance Company's Advanced Beginner Salsa Challenge. Class is on with Hedwige J Louis, and less than the price of a latte.
