This. 👏🏼👏🏼

Longevity is a pretty simple equation…keep asking your body and mind to do hard things.
⭕️
No, lifting heavy won’t create adhesions in your muscles
⭕️
No, lifting heavy won’t make your body bulky if you don’t want it to with lower volumes
⭕️
No, lifting heavy won’t cause your stabilizer muscles to become deficient
⭕️
Lift more often and good things will happen. Doesn’t have to be barbells. Could be potting soil, could be garage boxes, could be water jugs, could be small kids… just lift heavier over time 💪🏽

Just another reason I love owning my own business- leaving in the middle of the work day to help volunteer with at a nursing home. If you haven’t heard of them, go check out their page. They are an amazing local organization rescuing all the fur babies and giving back to the community 🐾🖤

It’s been a minute so I wanted to re-introduce myself!

🔅Who I am: My name is Dr. Rachel Drake DPT, PT. I’m a wife, momma 👧🏼👦🏻, animal lover 🐾, breast cancer survivor 🩷 that was born and raised in Boone County. I attended the University of Indianapolis where I first got my Associate Degree in Physical Therapy (PTA) while simultaneously working on my Bachelor’s in Exercise Science. I then went on to get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

I have been practicing in outpatient orthopedics since 2008 with a special interest in sports medicine and more recently in cancer rehab. I love using manual techniques along with targeted specific exercise to get people feeling their best. I have additional training in
*dry needling
*cupping/myofascial decompression
*K-Tape
*ASTYM/ instrument assisted massage

When I’m not in the clinic you can find me spending time outdoors with my family and dogs, listening to true crime podcasts, or if I’m lucky- traveling 🌎

🔅What I offer: I opened IndyPinPoint PT in 2021 as a way to deliver my patients 1-1 personalized and comprehensive care.
Services to choose from:
▪️PT Initial Orthopedic Evaluation
▪️PT 45-60’ follow up visit
▪️30’ Myofascial decompression/cupping
▪️30’ Stretch Zone

🔅My goals:
To deliver patient centered treatment with the latest evidence based medicine. I want to empower and educate my clients towards a healthier, pain free life.

🔅Extras: At this time I do not accept insurance. Any PT service can be reimbursed through your HSA. In most cases, you DO NOT need a referral to receive PT services.

Why add estim to your dry needle appointment?🤨

Electrical stimulation (e-stim) can be combined with dry needling to enhance its effects. E-stim can help with pain relief by stimulating large nerve fibers which overrides smaller nerve fibers that cause pain, essentially tricking the brain out of feeling pain. 🧠

Other benefits of combining e-stim and dry needling include:
* Improved muscle function
* Increasing blood flow
* Reduced muscle tone in spasms
* Increased pain threshold
* Increased range of motion at joints
* Enhanced brain and spinal cord neural processing
* Reduced nerve muscle end plate noise
* Increased release of endogenous opioids

Comment Estim below if you are curious to know more!

Any one else notice the marks on the NBA players during the recent NBA finals?! ⭕️

Cupping creates negative pressure to help lift up the tissues which allows increased blood flow to the area. By doing so, it can reduce muscle soreness and enhances faster recovery. Much appreciated by these athletes as they have back to back competitions with little down time.

Interested in cupping and how it can enhance your recovery? Send me a message so we can get you back to feeling your best!

Reminder: dry needling is an adjunct to your treatment plan- not THE treatment plan. To obtain best possible results, therapeutic exercise as well as other manual techniques are used in physical therapy to help you achieve your goals.

Let’s face it, consistent exercise is tough. Exercising while going through cancer treatment can seem nearly impossible. But I wanted to shed some light on what I’ve learned. Promising new research is showing that exercising around 60% your max heart rate heightens oxygenation to the tumor which can make it more susceptible to chemo and radiation 🤯 increasing the efficacy of these treatments!

Gentle to moderate exercise has also been shown to decrease symptoms of chemo related fatigue, decrease risk of reoccurrence, improve bone health in women using estrogen blocking medication, eases anxiety, and the list goes on.

Don’t know where to start? Walking at a moderate pace is a great place. Try and aim for 150 minutes a week. If you would like a more tailored program, reach out and I’d love to set something up for you!

Did you know that cupping can help improve the look and feel of your scars? Which is great for me since I’ve added quite a few recently!

“Suction from cupping draws fluid into the treated area. This suction force expands and breaks open tiny blood vessels (capillaries) under your skin. Your body replenishes the cupped areas with healthier blood flow and stimulates proper and normal healing at a cellular level.”
-Cleveland Clinic

Other potential benefits of cupping can include:
* Reduced pain and inflammation
* Decreased muscle tightness
* Improved blood/lymphatic flow
* Increased range of motion
* Release of scar tissue

*fun fact about me: This Celtic cross was my first tattoo in honor of my late Grandpa. During my reconstruction they had to cut the cross in half to harvest the flap. ♥️

Four weeks after surgery I developed axillary web syndrome or better known as cording. Cording is common, occurring in up to 78% of patients undergoing surgery where 1 or more lymph nodes were removed.

Naturally, not only as a physical therapist but now as a patient, I wanted to know how to treat it. And fortunately by treating myself quickly, my cording was able to go away within a week. So that got me thinking about the traditional way of having to wait to see a provider to get a referral, wait to get in to physical therapy evaluation and then wait to get follow up treatments and how long these people have to deal with pain and dysfunction. 😣

So I’m using this recovery period to take continuing education courses on how best to treat and care for this ever growing patient population. While I’m not pursing a lymphedema specialty at this point, I’d love to start helping more women recovering from breast reconstruction regain pain free function more quickly. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to set up an appointment in the future. 🩷

Quick facts about cording:
* Typically appears 2-4 weeks after surgery but can appears months or even years afterwards
* Cording does NOT mean you will get lymphedema
* Pain, pulling, tightness starts in the armpit and can travel all the way down to the thumb
* Usually follows a neuro-vascular pattern and can often be misdiagnosed

-Second picture shows the lymphatic system. Yellow dots are lymph nodes and white lines show the lymphatic vessels. You can see how it spans the entire body and is very superficial-

And just like that. The teacher becomes the student.

4 weeks post op today and officially cleared to start regaining my range of motion back 🥳 Also cleared for scar work. I’m sure I have no former patients that would love to help me break down my scar tissue 😆🫣

Update:

On 12/14 I underwent a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using an autograft flap from my superior glutes. Surgery went great and I was able to fly back from New Orleans yesterday. We also got the best early Christmas gift with the news I am now cancer free 🥹

The recovery is a little lengthy but if things continue to go well, I should be able to start scheduling patients starting in February! 🥳

Wishing everyone a very merry holiday season🎄

12/07/2023

It’s early, I’m tired from getting up multiple times last night (son thought he wet the bed, turns out he was just sweaty 🙄 plus an elephant size puppy walking around and needing to go out), it’s too cold, it’s too dark. All these excuses running through my head when my alarm went off this morning to work out. But then I was reminded that this time next week I won’t have a choice. I won’t be able to move my body how I want and that it will take me months to get back to where I am now. So instead, I switched my mindset to “I have to work out to I GET to work out!”
I encourage all of you. If you have the ability to move, do the work out! I promise you won’t regret it. And if you need help on knowing where to start, getting some new ideas, or just want to chat- please reach out! I’m here to help 🤗
