Following up on our previous post: What’s the difference between a Road Bike vs. Triathlon Bike?

1. Geometry: Road bikes have a more relaxed frame for comfort, while triathlon bikes feature aggressive geometry designed for aerodynamics.

2. Aerodynamics: Triathlon bikes prioritize cutting through the wind; road bikes balance aero with comfort.

3. Handlebars: Road bikes have drop bars for multiple hand positions. Triathlon bikes use aero bars for a streamlined position.

4. Purpose: Road bikes are versatile for group rides and varied terrains. Triathlon bikes are optimized for non-drafting races and speed.

5. Positioning: Road bikes offer a balanced, upright position. Triathlon bikes put riders in a forward, aero position.

If you are between the two, don’t hesitate to reach out and we can help point you in the right direction!

“I want to do Triathlons, do I need a Triathlon bike?”

To put it simply, the answer to this question we are commonly asked is, “no.” Of course, there are plenty of benefits of purchasing a Tri-Bike, however if you’re a recreational athlete looking to get into the sport, we would HIGHLY recommend starting with a well-fitting road bike first.

There are a few reasons why we recommend this:
1. Road bikes tend to be much more forgiving and adaptable to fit your body.
2. Many group rides will not allow triathlon bikes to participate due to not having easy access to braking while in the drops.
3. The “aero” position that TT bikes put you in is extremely aggressive and we see the majority of beginner athletes not being able to sustain this position - no matter how good the fit is.
4. The vast majority of aftermarket parts for these bikes are much more expensive and intricate than their road bike counterparts.

Now, by no means are we damning TT bikes. There are clear advantages to being in an aero position for competitive races. We also see plenty of athletes compete, and excel in these events in a normal, road bike style position.

If you have questions about this topic, please reach out! We’re happy to help with all your cycling questions and fitting guidance.

‼️Inserts and Shims are not the answer‼️

Bear with us as we explain.

Stability and power in cycling starts with the foot. Learning how to ACTIVELY create a rigid, stable foot will greatly impact your cycling performance. This is what we specialize in.

While adding passive supports (inserts/shims) can create some short-term stability, it is likely not the long-term answer. We see this often and do our best provide practical advice to help create long-term solutions.

Additionally, foot pain and numbness is often a result of an improper cleat and saddle position. Optimizing your position can greatly reduce forces felt at the foot.

If you’re struggling to get the results you are striving for, come see us!

Using different forms of training can aid in performance of cycling! A good Bike Fit should address more than just your bike🗣️

As Physical Therapists working with high-level athletes, we continually see the phrase of “everything in life should be done in moderation” play out. As cyclists, this is definitely the case.

Strength training is an obvious benefit that is easily understood, however using running might be a bit less obvious. Research suggests that improvements in cardiovascular fitness and overall endurance gained from running can positively impact cycling performance.

Cross-training with running can offer several benefits for cyclists as well. Running helps improve overall cardiovascular fitness, which can translate to enhanced endurance on the bike. It also engages different muscle groups, particularly those in the upper body and core, which are often underutilized in cycling. Additionally, running helps build bone density, which is beneficial for overall bone health and can reduce the risk of injuries like stress fractures. Incorporating running into a cycling training regimen can also provide mental refreshment by breaking up the monotony of constant cycling workouts, leading to improved motivation and enjoyment of training.

For example, a study published in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance found that incorporating running into a cycling training program improved overall aerobic capacity and cycling performance in trained cyclists.

Let’s talk about bike fittings on Hybrid bikes!

Hybrid bikes are arguably the most widely used and are ridden for a multitude of reasons ranging from around the neighborhood to across state lines. Fittings for these bikes are similar to road bikes, however can vary based on the goals of the rider and the geometry of the bike. Outside of the normal bike fitting assessment, specific things to look at on these bikes are the position of the brakes and where the feet are on the pedals.

As you can see in this picture, having the brakes too high forces the wrist into hyperextension, which places stress on the neurovascular structures of the hand. Also, educating on consistent, proper foot placement on the pedal is extremely important for cyclists that aren’t in a clipped in position. This allows them to maintain a consistent position that’s best for their body.

Struggling with your hybrid bike? Give us a call or shoot us a message! We’d love to help you out on your cycling journey.

Love hearing the results coming so quickly after a fitting! Often times, it takes a few rides to get used to a new, more efficient position, however there are times that when a fit is performed, there is an immediate resolve in symptoms! Congrats on the PR Sarah!

‼️🚨TRIGGER WARNING!🚨‼️ Being in an “aero” position might be killing your cycling performance - and let’s talk about it.

While achieving an aerodynamic position on a bike is crucial for reducing drag and maximizing speed, it’s not the sole factor determining cycling performance. As bike fitters and performance rehab experts, we prioritize overall comfort, biomechanical efficiency, and injury prevention alongside aerodynamics. And research supports this holistic approach.

For instance, the study “Aerodynamic versus Nonaerodynamic Cycling Time Trial Position on a Road Bicycle: A Case Study” by Koral et al. (2017) investigated the trade-off between aerodynamic advantage and comfort by analyzing the performance of a cyclist in both positions. The study demonstrates that while an aerodynamic position may offer marginal gains in speed, the discomfort associated with maintaining that position could compromise overall performance. Therefore, finding the optimal balance between aerodynamics and comfort is crucial for maximizing speed and endurance in cycling competitions. Thus, a comprehensive bike fitting considers multiple variables beyond simply aerodynamics to optimize both performance and rider well-being.

Let’s talk about hand numbness! This is one of the most common things bikers experience and a large reason why a lot of people are limited with the distance they can ride! Hand position on the bars is EXTREMELY important in order to avoid this issue.

This client was reaching a bit too far for the handlebars, putting his comfortable hand position at the side of the bars, not on the hoods. Not only does that limit quick access to the brakes, but it also puts the wrists in an extremely extended position, tensioning the nerves that innervate the hand. With a shorter stem, changing cleat and saddle position, his wrists are in a much better position which means happy nerves and no numbness!

If you’re struggling with your position on the bike, feel free to reach out and we can get you headed in the right direction to crush your 2024 cycling goals!

Had another great morning working with two elite cyclists! Working with cyclists that are in-tune with their bikes presents a different, more collaborative style of fitting which is a joy for us to participate in!

While elite cyclists tend to have adjustments in mind they want to change, performing an in-depth look at the body off the bike can shed light on adjustments they can make to drastically improve their cycling efficiency - far more than even some of the changes made to the bike.

A bike fit, guided by a skilled physical therapist, is your key to unlocking a seamless and enjoyable cycling experience. Beyond merely adjusting seat height and handlebar position, our bike fitting experience assesses the unique way your body moves, ensuring a harmonious alignment between your body and the bike. This personalized approach not only maximizes comfort but also plays a pivotal role in injury prevention.

As humans, we naturally develop asymmetries and when those asymmetries are put on a perfectly symmetrical machine, compensation will inevitably happen. With our backgrounds in Physical Therapy, we are able to combine our knowledge of human anatomy and performance training with our cycling experience to identify if any asymmetries are present and thus, ensure the best fit to how YOUR body currently moves. Your bike will be adjusted, but you will also gain insight in how your body moves and what you can do to enhance your comfort, efficiency and ultimately, your enjoyment of riding!
