NCRP Prof. Renata continues to do fantastic work in the community. Peace-in-Education ("PIE"), an NCRP sponsored organization that Renata created, with NCRP students (credit to oversight PIE Committee Kara Dellacioppa, Rene Castro, and Pastor Witherspoon), was recently nominated for the DOJ Partnership Award commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The US AG personally invited Renata and the organization members to the reception.

Also, the City of Lancaster has asked Renata and our NCRP students to design a 4-part series of transformative dialogues for the community and the redesigned City of Lancaster Police and Public Safety Department. In addition to designing and facilitating the dialogues, Renata will provide facilitation training to 15 public safety officers/civilian personnel. The Mayor of Lancaster, Rex Parris, will co-host the trainings and indicated he would like to identify the NCRP Program as the co-host.

The Compton Health Disparities Project - National Association for Community Mediation 06/16/2023

Following is the first of a five-part series on the amazing work that Peace in education is doing to support the City of Compton in addressing health inequity. More information is at https://www.nafcm.org/news/643191/The-Compton-Health-Disparities-Project-.htm

Living Out Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates the end of state government sanctioned enslavement of African Americans in the last of states that were in rebellion, Texas. This occurred on June 19,1865, through federal military enforcement. For the states not in rebellion, government sanctioned enslavement was abolished with the 13th Amendment on December 6, 1865.

A hundred years later, in 1964 and 1965 the federal government passed landmark civil rights legislation, to address the discrimination that continued to bar many residents of the Untied States from full engagement in, and equal access to, public places, employment, education, accommodations and voting. From these acts, the call for the work we share as members of NAFCM was heard: anywhere there is a disagreement, disturbance or disruption we are all impacted and are called to be involved and to engage.

Sixty years into our birth, there is still much to be done. Here are two glimpses of the work NAFCM members are involved and engaged with, and making an impactful difference. Peace in Education, a project of the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding program at California State University, Dominguez Hills, was the recipient of the JAMS Foundation/NAFCM mini-grant in 2020 for Sustaining Community Connections.

Upon review of the City of Compton's Community Health Profile, it was clear that systemic racism touched every social determinant of community health. Peace In Education, through community conversations, acted the role the community had outlined for addressing disparities in access to healthcare within the city of Compton. Through substantial interviews of members of the community, nonprofit organizations who have worked with the community, political leaders, and other stakeholders, Peace in Education volunteers began to dive deep into issues not only directly related to healthcare but many other factors that indirectly impact Compton's health outcomes such as food insecurity, adequate transportation, community-based resources, and mental health.

The Compton Health Disparities Project - National Association for Community Mediation The following is the first in a multi-part series highlighting the work of Peace in Education, a project of the Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, and Peacebuilding program at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

The panelists will also address the possibility of using the evidence collected by the commissions, as well as their findings and recommendations as trial evidence before international courts and tribunals.
