Underground newspapers were a big part of the countercultural movements in the 1960s, and one of the most notorious was The Los Angeles Free Press, often called the "Freep" by its readers. Founded in 1964 by labor organizer Arthur Glick "Art" Kunkin. The Freep covered politics and culture, including women's liberation, the Chicano movement, gay liberation, and mystic and esoteric areas. The ads are particularly far out.
The Arthur Kunkin / Los Angeles Free Press Collection documents at Cal State, Dominguez Hills documents the life of Art Kunkin from his time as a socialist organizer to his role as publisher and editor of the Los Angeles Free Press and to his later life as a new age practitioner. A grant from the NHPRC is support the work of archivists to process, describe, and start to digitize approximately 150 linear feet of material from the collection.
