A New FHWA Guide on Why Crosswalk Marking Design Matters | Kittelson & Associates, Inc. 11/30/2023

https://www.kittelson.com/ideas/why-crosswalk-design-matters/

"testing demonstrated that HVCs influence crosswalk exchanges in several important ways:

- HVCs have a positive effect on driver yielding rates with or without additional signage.
- HVCs most improve the yielding behavior of people driving between 20 and 30 mph.
- HVCs’ influence on the yielding behavior diminishes as vehicle speed increases beyond 30 mph."

As covered in the NC Friendly Driver Program, the risk of fatality in a pedestrian/motorist crash is four times higher at 30mph than at 20mph. As such, the improved yielding behavior of drivers at High Visibility Crosswalks can save lives.

A request for your support from BikeWalk NC ahead of Giving Tuesday.

Our state has seen an increasing number of traffic deaths and serious injuries, especially among people walking and biking, that have had profound and lasting effects on the lives of individuals and families. You or someone you know may even be one of those affected.

These tragedies—many of them preventable–serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for all of us to come together and take action to address the root causes of such events.

BikeWalk NC is working for a future where biking and walking are safe, accessible, and even preferred modes of transportation for people of all ages and abilities. We are committed to promoting safe and accessible active mobility of all types, and are uniquely positioned to make positive advancements toward this vision. Generous donors like you help us continue to advocate for policies and infrastructure that prioritize the safety and well-being of people who use our transportation networks throughout our great state.

We are reaching out to you with a heartfelt request to consider making a donation (https://bikewalknc.wildapricot.org/Donate) to support our efforts. Your contribution to BikeWalk NC will directly impact our current efforts to:

Advocate for Safer Streets: Bikewalk NC has been working with legislators, policymakers and community leaders on legislation to improve and implement policies that enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians and allow for funding for the development of all types of bike facilities, crosswalks, greenways, trails and other essential infrastructure.

Educate: As the recipient of a grant from the NC Governor’s Highway Safety Program we have been able to provide educational programs like the North Carolina Friendly Driver Program as well as the online North Carolina Bicycle Safety Quiz to schools, communities, professional drivers, and law enforcement agencies to raise awareness about the rights and responsibilities of active mobility users, fostering a culture of mutual respect on our transportation corridors.

Engage and Empower: BikeWalk NC hosts the annual NC BikeWalk Transportation Summit and other activities throughout the year that allow us to connect with stakeholders and allies across North Carolina, empowering and helping local advocates to promote change at the grassroots level, and building a network of safe streets advocates statewide.

We invite you to become a valued partner in our mission. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference, and is truly appreciated. Together, we can enable the creation of safer, healthier, and more connected communities, accessible for all.

Yours in action,

Terry Lansdell, Executive Director, BikeWalk NC,
and the Board of BikeWalk NC

“Nationally, annual average daily bicycle trips per year climbed 37% between 2019 and 2022. Within that time period, 2020 and 2021 saw sharp gains, with bike trips flattening out in 2022. While there hasn’t been any backsliding, the report states that “the flat line in 2022 is a warning that continued investment in safety-focused active transportation infrastructure … will be critical to re-animating growth.”
