We installed our upcoming exhibition WAŊUPINI: CLOUDS OF REMEMBRANCE AND RETURN this week. It opens on Monday January 8 in the Upper West Oval Room of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. The exhibition features works by Nawurapu Wunuŋmurra and Bulthirrirri Wunuŋmurra. It was curated by Professor Douglas Fordham and supported in part by the UVA Parents Program.

The Rotunda is open daily, 9am-5pm

Images show Kluge- Ruhe Senior Collections Manager, Nicole Wade, installing a ceramic vessle by Bulthirrirri Wunuŋmurra. Bulthirrirri has said of the work, “I have been painting 'waŋupini' on ceramic pots as it reminds me about the connection the Makassans have with Yolŋu.”

WAŊUPINI: CLOUDS OF REMEMBRANCE AND RETURN will be on view in the Upper West Oval Room of the Rotunda at the University of Virginia January 8, 2024- July 7, 2024.

Clouds drift in subtly modified patterns in these artworks by Nawurapu Wunuŋmurra and Bulthirrirri Wunuŋmurra, Yolŋu artists from Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern Territory.

The thunderheads are associated with the beginning of the monsoonal wet season and the first sighting of "perahu" (boats) from Indonesia on the horizon. Fishermen based in the port of Makassar in Sulawesi, Indonesia, visited the north coast of Australia every year starting in late December or early January to gather "trepang" (sea cucumber) and engage in trade. They departed on the winds associated with "bulunu," or the southeast cloud formations that herald the dry season.

Bulthirrirri recounts how she paints a story that was passed down from Nawurapu: “Waŋupini (clouds) is the same story as my father taught me about the sunset. The sun is going down. The sunset on the clouds is like the red sails of the Makassans’ ships leaving at the end of the season.”

This exhibition was curated by Professor Douglas Fordham and is supported by the UVA Parents Program.

1. In March, UVA PhD candidates Brendan O'Donnell and Emmy Monaghan curated the exhibition "Performing Country", which explores the ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists consider the complex idea of Country – the people, plants, animals, creator beings, and stories that all emerge from the place they
call home. The exhibition is on view through February 25, 2024

2. In April, we presented the "Matha Ngupanmi Summit: an exploration of Yolngu art and ideas," at American University. A delegation of Yolngu artists and knowledge holders from Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre launched Madayin with a week of programs and events. The delegation included Mayatili Marika, Bulmirri Yunupiŋu, Milminyiya Dhamarrandji, Gunybi Ganambarr, Dhamarrmarr Munuŋgurr, Doŋga Maymuru, Ishmael Marika and Binygurr Wirrpanda.

3. In June, scholar and Yuwaalaraay cultural practitioner Dr. Jilda Andrews visited Kluge-Ruhe and gave a beautiful talk on Country and Belonging in the context of our current exhibitions. Andrews is a researcher and museum professional based in Canberra. Her work is focused on cultural material held in museum collections. She is co-chair of Kluge-Ruhe's Advisory Council.

4. In November, students from the Community Lab School visited Kluge-Ruhe for a tour and robust discussion with Manager of Education and Programs Jaimeson Daley. The students’ teacher Lizzie Stallings reported “they enjoyed the art, felt like they learned a ton, and thought it was a ‘really cool’ museum (which is the highest compliment from 14- and 15-year-olds)."

We are very excited to announce the upcoming exhibition titled "close to the wind" by the artist Lisa Waup. The exhibition will be on view December 16, 2023- June 30 2024 in our Focus Gallery and is curated by Hannah Presley.

Lisa Waup is a mixed-cultural First Nations artist and curator, born in Narrm (Melbourne), whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses a diverse range of media, including weaving, printmaking, photography, sculpture, fashion, and digital art. With a deep connection to the symbolic power of materials, her work reflects her personal experiences, family history, Country, and broader historical narratives.

Through her practice, Waup weaves together threads of lost history, ancestral relationships, motherhood, and the passage of time, culminating in contemporary expressions that speak to her past, present, and future. In her words, "As a multidisciplinary artist, I'm guided to utilize so many different mediums—they really talk to me—and in turn they're able to explain my story in different ways, they all connect with each other. Material diversity is a big part of what I do in my practice—I'm happy to move across various media and am always open to exploring new materials and approaches that connect to the work I am making at the time.”

“Performing Country” exhibits First Nations Australian culture through continuously unfolding artistic traditions 11/29/2023

"The physical reverberations of Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s brush strokes can be seen throughout the interweaving raw stripes of color down the canvas, which stretches the full length of the wall. Each pigment is pressed so hard into the canvas that there are upturned indents of the physical brush and even some left behind bristles ... In every dig of the brush or new locus of color created directly on the canvas, the inspiration to bear homage to her land and country is palpable."

On Native American Heritage Day we are highlighting the book

MONACAN MILLENNIUM
A Collaborative Archaeology and History of a Virginia Indian People
by Jeffrey L. Hantman (UVA Press, 2021)

"While Jamestown and colonial settlements dominate narratives of Virginia’s earliest days, the land’s oldest history belongs to its native people. Monacan Millennium tells the story of the Monacan Indian people of Virginia, stretching from 1000 A.D. through the moment of colonial contact in 1607 and into the present.

Written from an anthropological perspective and informed by ethnohistory, archaeology, and indigenous tribal perspectives, this comprehensive study reframes the Chesapeake’s early colonial period—and its deep precolonial history—by viewing it through a Monacan lens. Shifting focus to the Monacans, Hantman reveals a group whose ritual practices bespeak centuries of politically and culturally dynamic history. This insightful volume draws on archeology, English colonial archives, Spanish sources, and early cartography to put the Monacans back on the map. By examining representations of the tribe in colonial, postcolonial, and contemporary texts, the author fosters a dynamic, unfolding understanding of who the Monacan people were and are." - UVA Press

Last month, we had a fantastic visit with Jennifer L. Biddle! She gave a talk about her work and tours to the public of our current exhibition, PERFORMING COUNTRY, on view until March 3, 2024

Highlighting never-before-seen works from the museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition explores the ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists explore the complex idea of Country – the people, plants, animals, creator beings, and stories that all emerge from the place they call home.

PERFORMING COUNTRY was sponsored by the UVA Parents Program. It was curated by Emmy Monaghan and Brendan O’Donnell with Henry Skerritt.

Jennifer L. Biddle is Gough Whitlam and Malcom Fraser Chair in Australian Studies (Harvard University) and Associate Dean Engagement and Impact, Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture (University of New South Wales). She has worked with Warlpiri people in Lajamanu for three decades, and more recently, in transnational projects with First Nations and Indigenous artists, curators and designers on experimental new media research.

"This Country really belongs to Aboriginal people. Our ancestors lived on this Country, on this ground; old men lived on this Country, living on bush food. Aboriginal people live here today, looking after the Country. We all look after the Country, men and women together. The women look after their Country by dancing their ceremonies. The white people only come lately, to this Aboriginal land."

In 1990, artists working in the remote community of Utopia transitioned away from producing batik in favor of experimenting with different media. Carving wood into ceremonial objects had been practiced for centuries, so the translation of their artistic
practice to woodcut printmaking was natural. These prints, a selection from 72 artworks that make up the Utopia Suite, demonstrate this moment of experimentation.
