I woke up on Day 4 at the Beyond Becoming an Outdoors Woman ready to do more than just fish. Today, I wanted to CATCH a fish!
We stayed close to camp for our last morning of fishing. Our groups meandered along Torrey Creek and set up between Trail Lake and Ring Lake. Fish were caught, just not by me. 🎣 I had several bites and managed to get one fish out of the water, but I didn't land it. My most impressive catch was getting my line stuck between some rocks. My first elk hair caddis, tied by me, lasted about an hour with the elk hair attached. Now, it is a Scandinavian nymph. That is my story and I am sticking to it. So if anyone knows where the Scandinavian trout hang out in Wyoming, I am ready!
After our morning of fishing, it was time to return to camp, eat lunch, and travel home. I had a huge smile on my face as I packed my gear and loaded the truck. I had great roommates, new friends, actual fly-fishing skills, and an appreciation for all of the people who made this camp happen.
William Poole was the first person I contacted about the camp. I teased him daily about not leaving camp because Connie was an amazing cook. He was great! He answered our questions and helped facilitate the perfect setting to learn all that we did. Thank you!
Additional thanks to Ray, Molly, Jay, Ryan, Sadie, Maggie, and Alexa for showing us how to cast, fly tying, identify fish and bugs, taking us on hikes, tying on my flies when I forgot my glasses 🤓, and for your leadership!
If you ever have the chance to attend a camp experience at Whisky Mountain Conservation Camp, the food will be one of the many highlights of your trip. Connie is a wonderful person and she keeps everyone well-fed with delicious food. I love lemon desserts and she blessed us with three lemon desserts during our stay. 🍋 Thank you!
On my trip home, I started planning my next adventures. I am so grateful for this experience and look forward to sharing my fly-fishing skills with others. Everyone showed so much improvement! I am so proud of us. ❤

⭐️ Have a safe and fun weekend! ⭐️
My Beyond BOW experience was so beyond my expectations! I learned so many skills and gained confidence using those skills. I owe that to our instructors and the other participants. I am left at a loss for superlatives to describe Days 3 (& 4).
On Day 3 we went fly fishing on the Wind River. Sadie and Maggie showed our group how to study rocks and the water to see which insects were hatching. From there, we picked flies to use. We tried nymphs and hoppers. I tried a bit of side casting and roll casting. It was nice to get help with both while experts were on site. Although I had a few bites, I did not land a fish that day.
After another tasty lunch made by Miss Connie, we went to the Lodge for our second fly-tying class with Jay. On this day he had reinforcements. Thank you, Ray, Molly, and Maggie, for joining the fun! I am certain we will all become experts at fly tying one day, but this skill takes time and practice. ❤ I decided to share one of my creations. It was the very first one I made. We will reserve judgment for now. 😂
As a group, we decided to walk to Torrey Creek Falls near the camp for our last evening together. The trail we were on could take us to Lake Lousie or the falls. Thankfully, we made it to the falls. One of our instructors, Alexa, pointed out that we were leaving the area of conservation (the camp) for the land of preservation (Fitzpatrick Wilderness). It was a fun hike and the falls were as beautiful as I remembered.
When we arrived back at camp, a few of us went to the river area for a campfire. Others decided to pack and prepare for our last day. I chose to join the campfire folks. It was the perfect way to end the day.

Beyond BOW at Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp Day 2
After our delicious-amazing-seriously-incredible breakfast, we gathered our gear and headed out for our first opportunity to fly fish and put our new skills to work. We went to Pete's Pond in Dubois and spread out around the pond with our groups.
Each of our groups was set up with instructors to assist us. Our small group had Sadie and Maggie to help us. ❤️ Jessica led the group by catching this MONSTER (1st picture) within minutes of arriving at the pond. After the pond started getting a bit busier, our group decided to move to the river to test our skills mending the line and trying to avoid catching trees and bushes.
After our fishing experience, we rode back to camp for lunch, knot-tying practice, or a bit of free time. Then, it was back to the dining hall to learn how to identify fish. I have decided the Cutt-Slam might be a future goal, but I will need more time to learn the differences between each fish before I can perfect it. 🎣
Next up was fly tying. Our instructor for this session was Jay. Jay has been a fishing guide for about 40 years. He has already forgotten more about fly fishing than I may ever know. He was incredibly patient and extremely knowledgeable. I tied a wooly burger, elk hair caddis, and a few others. I will not be sharing pictures of my creations. 🤣 I will give an update on one of my elk hair caddis' tomorrow.
Our larger group started to know each other better on Day 2. I appreciated each of the ladies in our workshop for different reasons. The conversations, laughs, and camaraderie started to shine during our first fly tying class.
After a fun-filled day, seven of us decided to attend the Dubois Friday Night Rodeo. It did not disappoint! This rodeo had events we hadn't seen in other places. We especially enjoyed the kid and ranch events.
Stay tuned for Days 3 & 4 adventure!

If you are one of our regular followers, you know I love Wyoming's amazing outdoors. What might surprise you is that I was not an avid fly fisherwoman. Not even close.
I had tried fly fishing. My husband had attempted to teach me a few times. (I could not tie the knots. He was patient.) I even went on a float trip with the amazing folks at Crazy Rainbow Fly Fishing. Despite everyone's best efforts, I didn't possess the skills needed to fly fish.
Then, while adding events to Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Calendar, I happened to notice the deadline to apply for Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) Workshops and a Beyond BOW experience with Wyoming Game and Fish. I knew about the program. I had heard about it from friends and colleagues and had added their events to our calendar over the years.
The deadline was in March. Would this be the year I finally learned to fly fish? I submitted my application and in April I learned I had been accepted. 🎣 😍 I had already planned another adventure for the same weekend, so it took a few minutes to rearrange that trip to make both work. I am sooooo glad I did!
------------ ------------
Day 1: I arrived at Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp on Thursday around lunchtime. I located my cabin and started to unpack the truck. I met two of my roommates and the fourth joined us shortly thereafter. We quickly unpacked and headed inside to eat lunch and meet the rest of the women and staff.
Our schedule for that afternoon and evening consisted of learning about large carnivore safety and how to use bear spray, knot tying, casting and safety (how to not hook yourself or people around you), and entomology (Insects 101).
It was a full day between travel and learning. Some of the ladies had traveled 5-6 hours to get there.
Stay tuned for our adventures from Day 2.

The folks with the Wyoming Motorcycle Trials (yes, trials and not trails) Association do not race motorcycles.
That’s right! The men and women who ride articulate themselves and their seatless motorcycles through set challenges. The challenges could be rocks, turns, other competitors or spectators (though not intentionally), and speed or lack thereof. It is so fun to watch and it isn't a loud event. Surprised? I was, too!
Before each stage, competitors walk the staging area on foot. It is one of my favorite things to watch with this sport. Riders look at the course, mentally preparing how they will tackle each part. At times they bounce themselves as they will on their bikes or turn their backs as they maneuver through the course in their minds.
Then, they get on their motorcycles and ride it. Each person advises the next riders. The way they work together is commendable for competitors.
You can see what I mean this weekend! WMTA is having a competition this weekend in South Pass City. You will love it!
