Today is my last day as the 29th Chief of the National Guard Bureau. Though my time in uniform has come to an end, my support for our Nation and our National Guard will continue. I will forever be a fierce advocate for our Soldiers, Airmen, and National Guard families, and will forever remember and share our National Guard story. Thank you for everything you do to remain "Always Ready, Always There!"

Happy Juneteenth! On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people in Texas were free. Although President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Emancipation Proclamation only freed enslaved people in states that had joined the Confederacy and slavery in the United States was not fully abolished until the 13th Amendment was ratified on December 6, 1865, General Granger's announcement was still a powerful message felt throughout Texas and the other southern states. Juneteenth – a name combining June and nineteenth - was celebrated by freedmen in Texas as an annual event beginning in 1866.

In the following decades, Juneteenth commemorations spread across the country as African Americans migrated from Texas to other states. Juneteenth parades were often led by men who had served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. Those proud veterans represented a group that fought in every major campaign and battle during the last two years of the war, earning 25 Medals of Honor. Lincoln recognized their contributions, saying “Without the military help of the black freedmen, the war against the South could not have been won.” We honor them on Juneteenth.
