Last month, UHCHI Executive Director Sheryl Morris participated in the U.S. Department of Labor's "Roundtable Discussion on Newcomers & Access to Good Jobs," hosted at the offices of UNITE HERE Local 1. We are grateful to US DOL Acting Secretary Julie Su for her leadership and vision in creating our nation's first high-road job training partnerships. UHCHI is proud to be home to the State of Illinois’ first and only US DOL registered apprenticeship for the position of Chef de Partie. We look forward to continuing the work with government partners, community-based organizations and our employer partners to expand opportunities for more individuals to have access to high-quality, union jobs in the hospitality industry.

UHCHI would like to thank our community-based organization partners, St. Sabina Employment Resource Center, E&ES, Youth Job Center, Lawrence Hall, and Westside Health Authority for attending our Cohort 13 brunch, which celebrated the nation’s inaugural Youth Apprenticeship Week (YAW)!

We would also like to thank Chandler Meyer-Brown, Director of Career and Technical Education, and Armando Rodriguez, Deputy Chief of College & Careers, with Chicago Public Schools as we eagerly anticipate the exciting initiatives ahead.

Kudos to Cohort 13 for orchestrating a successful inaugural event!

On the heels of , we are celebrating UHCHI Culinary Apprentice Darryl Hall. At just 22 years old, Darryl is a multi-talented artist dedicated to both the culinary arts and music. After 8 weeks of intensive classroom and experiential training in early 2023, Darryl was placed at the Fairmont Chicago. Today, he is at Cook III making nearly $25 per hour and recently finished his one thousand hours of on-the-job training and is ready to become a journey worker. His new culinary career is helping him achieve his creative and financial goals. We can't wait to see where Darryl's journey takes him!

Last month, UHCHI chefs catered In Culinary, Inc.'s kick off of the second season of In Culinary Conversations hosted by Chef Paul Young!

UHCHI Culinary Apprentices and ProStart Program students worked together at the event and had the opportunity hear and learn from Pitmaster Phil Wingo.

The UHCHI team was proud to be part of this event and to prepare the Happy Hour Nosh by repurposing food from Fight2Feed. Looking forward to the next Conversation!

On February 16, UHCHI Executive Director Sheryl Morris, who serves as the Apprentice Ambassador Workgroup Lead, was at Joliet Junior College for the 2024 Apprenticeship Illinois Apprentice Ambassador Kick-Off. Two UHCHI alumni, Alan Rodriguez and Martha Martinez, are serving as 2024 Apprentice Ambassadors to help highlight the importance of apprenticeship programs throughout the state of Illinois.

At UHCHI, we make sure our students have the support they need to achieve their goals. January was Financial Wellness Month and UHCHI was pleased to partner with BMO Harris to provide a financial literacy workshop for our Culinary Apprentices. Thank you to Edgar Villa and Valerie Dehoyos of BMO Harris for sharing your time and talent with our students.

After completing her eight weeks of intensive classroom and practical training followed by 1,000 hours of paid on-the-job training at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Connella Beasley graduated this past November during National Apprenticeship Week to become a certified Culinary Journeyworker. She continues to do great work at the Sheraton as a Cook I. Congratulations, Conella! We are very proud of you!
