Michael Schlesinger, alumnus of the Law School and former director of the Business Enterprise Clinic, now known as the Community Enterprise & Solidarity Economy Clinic, established the Education Fund to provide scholarships for outstanding clinic students. These merit-based scholarships are awarded each year to a clinic student who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to and performance of direct legal services to clients.

Moot Court Honors Program Director Professor Joanne Hodge received the “Virginia S. Mueller Outstanding Member Award” from the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL).
The award is named after a Sacramento lawyer who worked tirelessly to advance the position of women in the legal profession and given to members who make exemplary contributions to the NAWL mission.

UIC Law’s Pro Bono Litigation Clinic (PBLC) was awarded a $12,500 grant from the Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF) to support the expansion of its name and gender marker change work on behalf q***r and transgender individuals in Chicago.
Grant funds will go towards offsetting the costs of name and gender marker changes for our under-served clients, assist with the outreach to LGBTQIA communities, and provide on-site services and networking opportunities for clinical students.
There will also be opportunities for IBF board members to collaborate with the clinical students on a range of student/mentor pro bono projects.

Day 2 of the Rising Attorney’s Inclusive Summer Experience (R.A.I.S.E.) was a success! Students had the unique opportunity to sit in on a mock “The Right of Publicity and Video Games” class where they explored the legal implications of using a public figure’s image and/or likeness in video games, accompanied by a mock class in Trademark Law.
Rising attorneys also got a chance to receive tips on how to succeed in law school and network with current UIC students, faculty and staff.

UIC Law hosted its 2nd annual Rising Attorneys Inclusive Summer Experience (R.A.I.S.E.), a program designed to provide access and information to UIC undergraduate students interested in impacting their communities by using a law degree to promote social justice.
Day 1 highlights included attending mock Evidence and Restorative Justice law classes taught by UIC Law professors and a mock trial featuring Illinois Appellate Court Judges Justice Jesse Reyes and Justice David Navarro.

The Fair Housing Legal Support Center at UIC Law received a $100K+ grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) to offer a complimentary Fair Housing and Fair Lending course to undergraduate and graduate students in the Chicago metropolitan area.
As a part of the organization's Education and Outreach Initiative, the course was created to increase public awareness about federal, state, and local laws and regulations that assist in eliminating discrimination in housing and preserving homes for vulnerable persons.
Desired majors are Political Science, Sociology, Social Work, Urban Planning, History, Public Health, Architecture, or Pre-Law, however all interested students currently enrolled in a college or university in Chicago are encouraged to apply.

Associate Dean of Experiential Education at the UIC School of Law Professor Kim Ricardo and Interim Sociology Department Head for the UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Professor Claire Laurier Decoteau, PhD have received over $200K in grant money from the Society of Family Planning to fund their interdisciplinary project, “Abortion on the move: Navigating the fractured reproductive healthcare landscape.”

Each year, donors and long-time supporters Lee, Cynthia, and Zander Sprague travel to Chicago to attend the law school’s spring commencement ceremony where they award a $25,000 scholarship to a third-year law student interested in pursuing public interest law. The family also hosts a local dinner for all current and past Sprague scholarship winners.
Zander Sprague presented the 2024 Lucy Sprague Public Service Scholarship award to UIC Law graduate Ruby Valle at the ceremony.

Commencement was held May 5 at the Credit One Arena and featured ceremony speaker and law school alumnus United States District Judge the Honorable Judge James Shadid, as well as encouraging words from UIC Law Dean Nicky Boothe, UIC Law spring valedictorian Michael Angarola, University of Illinois System President Timothy Killeen, UIC Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda, and law school alumnus Howard Ankin.
UIC Provost Karen Colley and Vice President Jay Walsh were also in attendance.
