Happy History Monday! We recently discovered this full page of advertisements for artists and businesses within the Fine Arts Building, from the Chicago Tribune in 1906. What a treasure trove of art and creativity from over a century ago!
A quote at the bottom of the page (cut off in this photo) reads: "As is well known, the Fine Arts Building is the artistic center of all Chicago. Among its tenants may be found the leading artists, musicians, and art craft workers of the city. An eastern visitor who recently made a tour of the building, characterized it as the most interesting and wonderful building in the world, comprising what is found in no other building, practically all of the art interests of a city."

Walk a mile in their shoes: Northwestern alum walks across the country to support unhoused Chicago residents Sam Rezaei (Weinberg ‘22) has walked over 1,900 miles since June 17. He and his friend, Oberlin College senior James Dill, have been walking along state highways, sleeping in tents and loading up on supplies at convenience stores — covering between 25 and 30 miles six days per week. Some history about the old Sherwood school
Happy History Monday! Today we're taking a look at the Sherwood Music School, which occupied a suite on the 7th floor of the Fine Arts Building from approximately 1899 to 1920.
The Sherwood Music School was founded in 1895 by William H. Sherwood (1854 - 1911), and moved to the Fine Arts Building a few years later in 1899. Sherwood was an accomplished pianist and music teacher who studied in Europe - including being a student of Franz Liszt - before returning to the United States and starting his own music school.
The Sherwood Music School's mission was to foster professional musicians, and its success continued even following Sherwood's death in 1911. The school expanded to provide nationwide music education through its affiliated teachers and lesson books. In 1985, the school rebranded itself as the Sherwood Community Music School, no longer offering music degrees and instead proffering music programs and lessons for the Chicago community. In 2007, Columbia College Chicago purchased the school and, true to Sherwood's vision, it continued to promote lifelong involvement and development in music until 2019.
