Dreaming of last weekend 🌵

Sadly, I’m on call this weekend.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Hi friends 👋
Hope you’re enjoying the weekend!
I’m on call this weekend. For those who keep messaging me, saying, “it seems like you’re on call a lot.” You are right! I am on call q3. So an average, 1/3 of each month, 1/3 of each year, because there is only 3 of us MFM faculty at this time.
Luckily we do home call. So I round on my patients and am a phone call away if anything comes up. Our calls are made easier by great residents and OBGYN faculty who are in-house always, including weekends and week nights.

Does your job require you to work weekends?

I don’t always participate in an exchange with antiva❌ers but when I do… 💁🏻‍♀️

Some “doctor” was spewing lies about the cov*d shot and I just said “where did you get this info? Please cite your sources.”

So then his army attacked me and I fired back. Obviously I didn’t need his sources did I? Apparently the internet likes it when sassy pants fires back lol

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Colorectal cancer awareness month 💩

While colorectal cancer isn’t as common in pregnancy as other cancers, I have definitely seen it.

Make sure you get a colonoscopy if you are average risk and 45 years old, and earlier if you are high risk.

Shoutout to my husband who has made it his life mission to improve outcomes for cancer patients, in the operating room and outside with the overwhelming amount of important and guideline-changing research he does.

This study was even featured in because of how important it was.

Huge milestone for this little MFM with big dreams ✨

Proud to be serving at Communications committee Chair this year.

I started this platform after fellowship because I wanted to teach, and my first job didn’t have much of an opportunity for education, despite it being an “academic” job. I was so lucky to have met so many incredible women on here who inspired me to pave my own path, that you don’t have to fit in the box traditional medicine has made for us.

Happy belated women physicians day to all those trailblazers who helped pave the way. I will continue to pay it forward. 🌸

All the nerds are doing it 🤓

I’ve always been a huge reader. But med school, residency, fellowship, kids happened. I started getting back into it with mostly audiobooks. Last year I started reading physical books again. It was intimidating at first but so fun.

Here are my favorites from the list

📚 Fav Non-fiction:
This is going to hurt
Empire of pain (read it twice)
The woman they could not silence

📚 Fav fiction:
Wish you were here
Lilac girls
Tell the wolves I'm home

And a bunch of chick lit psychological thrillers I don't remember they all blend together now.

Have you read any of these?
Please leave recs below!!

If you’re on let’s be friends! I’ll put the link to my page on stories.

⚠️ Beware of blanket statements you see online. ⚠️

Social media isn’t the best place for education. Even doctors aren’t the most reliable in many instances.

There is a huge push toward doing less is better. Just like more is not better, less is not better. Every person and every pregnancy is different.

Whether we like it or not, we are older and less healthy than we’ve been before. With the right care, you can have a healthy pregnancy. Please see an MFM if you have a high risk pregnancy. Or even preconception.

We all need to adjust our expectations and with that, hopefully will have the best outcomes possible.

Leave your questions below, let’s discuss!

Hope you did too!

Happy November!

Just here to say that all you parents and caretakers of young children are heroes. Both kiddos sick with fevers is no joke. It’s coming for me. I’m masking up at home.

I feel like I haven’t been through this in a while. Pre-Cvd I had one baby who used to get sick all the time. Then cv_d hit and while all that was scary, I really think masks helped keep all the random respiratory illnesses away.

My daughter’s first grade teacher sent us an email saying she offered the kids masks and a bunch of them wanted to wear them, it sounded like she was afraid of what the parents would say and kept reiterating that she didn’t force anyone to wear a mask. Can’t even imagine how teachers feel wanting to protect themselves and their families!

Maybe we can get all the illnesses out of the way and have a quiet winter 😩

Hi my loves 🥰

I wish I could say I’ve been away from social media to take a break. 📱
I haven’t.
I’ve been here.
Lurking.
Tired.
Huge to-do lists.

Some days you want to lurk and not create content (most days).

But here is a rare picture of me at work in a dress.

I almost never wear a dress because the hospital is always freezing cold!

Photos from ‎Dr. Layan Alrahmani د. ليان الرحماني‎'s post 08/19/2022

Please have a back up plan if you’re having a planned home birth.

How far is the hospital from you?

Who’s car will you be using?
Who will drive?
Your midwife should stay until she speaks with the hospital doctors and midwives, not just dump you at the hospital front door (been there). She needs to give a proper hand off so they understand what’s happening and treat you promptly.

Don’t give me that about low risk pregnancy.

Pregnancy is not health neutral- it is always a risk.

I had 2 low risk pregnancies. One was a vacuum, fetal tachycardia and chorioamnionitis and needed antibiotics, the other was a double nuchal cord with a forceps and bad heart tones.

Long time followers know how passionate I am regarding informed decision making and patient autonomy. So the last slide is for those who don’t.

Happy weekend!
On call this weekend- Friday 7 am until Monday 7 am. My MFM call is home call, means I round on my inpatients and do inpatient consults, and get to go home. I’m available by pager and that can get quite busy. I get calls from our hospital labor and delivery and also outside hospitals requesting a consultation or to transfer patients.

Do you guys work nights or weekends?

What are you doing this weekend? I’m mostly chilling and going to the gym.

I’m a surgeon and nothing stresses me out more than trying to register my kids for park district activities!

How is mom life more stressful than work life?

What do you think??

07/11/2022

“You look tired” from a coworker is rude.
“You look tired” from a child is a call to action.

No, honey, mama isn’t tired, I just don’t have any makeup on.

Most days the only things on my face are sunscreen and eyebrow shadow. I decided the eyebrows have got to go (at least a few days a week lol).

07/05/2022

Goodnight all.

Happy Independence Day to the land of the free, and home of the brave. But only if you are a cis white male.

Praying for the victims of the highland park shootings. For their family members and loved ones. For the brave healthcare workers who had to witness the consequences.

I first learned about American mass shootings when I was in grade 8 in Canada. The Columbine shootings. Nothing has changed since then. 24 years later.

Went on vacation, and a stairwell selfie is the best picture I could come up with.

Hope you’re all having a lovely (long) weekend!

These are life patients. Not hypothetical patients.
Most of these pregnancies were highly desired.
No one expects to be in this situation.
The decision to end a pregnancy is never not devastating.

A lot of crying happens in my office. Patients cry. Families cry. I cry.

Outdated laws have no place in the clinic room.
Non-physicians and non-healthcare providers have no place in the clinic room.

I spoke with about what restricting abortion access in the U.S. means, and what you can do about it.

🌸article link in stories🌸

Banning abortions will not stop them from happening. Abortion bans lead to suicides, homicides and intimate partner violence. It leads to life threatening bleeding and infections.

Someone with life limiting birth defects should have the choice. It is NEVER an easy choice.

Patients I see have highly desired pregnancies. No one comes into an MFMs office without having an internal fight.

Blessed be the fruit.

06/28/2022

We are not ok. I am not ok.

Sometimes I’m energized by injustice. But often, I feel defeated and depleted.

In Illinois, abortion access is unchanged. We expect an influx of people coming in for care. My calling is to help women/pregnant people go through arguably the most difficult time of their lives.

As an MFM, a woman, a mother, a human, a physician, I will continue to counsel patients the same as I always have. I will not be working in a place that criminalizes a persons right to choose.

06/25/2022

OBGYNs and MFMs condemn the Supreme Court decision on abortion ban.

Our resolve is unwavering.

Vacation mode. ✌️

06/05/2022

Self care can take different forms. Social media doesn’t help with all the guilt that we’re not doing enough.

This is self care:
Family time
Alone time
Exercising
Resting
Eating vegetables
Eating cake

All this has been self care for me. I have taken a bit of a break from my art but hoping to get some inspiration and go back soon. I got a huge canvas that I need to get painted. At some point. When I feel like it.

It’s all about balance.

What brings you joy these days? What does self care look like for you?

Happy Sunday!

The person who killed 4 in Tulsa medical center bough a rifle hours before the attack. He was upset about the results of his recent back surgery. He murdered his surgeon and 3 others before killing himself.

Yet, my patient is having a hard time getting insulin for her pregestational diabetes.

So many wrong things with this picture.

My heart hurts.

So utterly heartbroken for the families, teachers, students, friends, of everyone involved. It was not just 19 lives ruined. 19 lives ended far too early. Far before their time. And so many lives changed forever, impacted directly or indirectly. Hundreds. Thousands.

This sociopath “legally” bought a machine gun.

The biggest weapon of mass destruction is right here in America 🇺🇸
