Last week marked the end of Jaden Ugbaja’s time as a Summer Research fellow here at CGH. Over the past ten weeks she worked with Kikelomo Ololade Wright (MBChB, MPH, FMCPH, MD, PgD) and her team at Lagos State University College of Medicine as well as the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.
With LASCOM, she was able to learn more about the harms of household air pollution and contribute to research being done to introduce cleaner cooking alternatives. As part of her time with LASEPA, she saw how multiple departments worked together to solve pressing environmental issues in Lagos.
“I know everything I learned in these last ten weeks will be instrumental to me as I continue to pursue a career in global health.”
Congratulations Jaden!

Today at CGH we are celebrating the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples! There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5% of the world's population, but account for 15% of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world's estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. Indigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Despite their cultural differences, Indigenous Peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. In order to raise awareness of the needs of these population groups, every August 9th commemorates the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
