Human papillomavirus (HPV) is closely associated with several cancers, including some gynecologic cancers. During National Immunization Awareness Month, we're encouraging you to take steps today that could prevent a cancer diagnosis. Start learning today by reviewing these five HPV quick facts:
1. The recommended age to receive the vaccine is 9 years old for boys and girls. The vaccination is recommended through age 26.
2. Experts recommend two doses of the vaccine, the second dose generally given six months to a year after the first dose.
3. The HPV vaccination prevents new HPV infections but does not treat existing HPV infections or diseases.
4. Individuals who have received the HPV vaccine should still be screened for cervical cancer beginning at age 21 years.
5. More than 135 million doses of the HPV vaccine have been distributed in the US since the vaccine was introduced in 2006.
Supporting gynecologic cancer research is a core mission of the FWC. To date, more than $11 million has been awarded. The bulk of the research funding has been awarded to early career investigators, and in most cases, this was their first funded research project.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month! Let's talk about the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
The HPV vaccine is recommended for preteens (boys and girls) at age 11-12, but it can be given as early as age 9 and up to age 45. This vaccine, available since 2006 and typically given in two doses, protects against the types of HPV that cause most cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. By getting vaccinated, we can significantly reduce the risk of these cancers and protect future generations.
