Rentchicagoboats.com was called upon to help an engineering group by taking them on to a waterway jobsite. We all layered up for a brisk morning on the river and motored them around to review shoreline along the river that’s earmarked for tree removal, beautification, and the installation of more water gardens. I think the project is exciting for our patrons cause it opens up the waterway making it more passable east of Goose Island as well as restoring the rivers ecology that much more.

We’re the leading and only boat rental company in Chicago that’s available year-round to serve the TV/movie industry, environmental industry, and other special projects as they come our way. a Rent Chicago Boat Story
We established our company in 2001 and opened our doors in the Spring of 2002. We wanted to build a company with boats that no one in the Chicago marketplace had and that meant pontoons and motor boats. We also established the first company in Chicago to rent and lease-share recreational motor boats for a season too. So in 2003 I talked to several manufacturers and Bennington Boat Company was the most interested in working with us. We bought our first pontoon, Grandpa Benn, and in 2005 we bought Bennington’s 1st deck boat shown above. The boat was one they took around to dealers to showcase the model, so of course it had all the accoutrements, far beyond what a rental boat should of had including a 500+ hp engine. Leasing, renting, and chartering the new deck boat was real easy. Everybody wanted to be on it.
We established a captain’s college with it in mind, and unfortunately the boat kept coming back to the marina with the most serious damage. One lessee took the boat across Lake Michigan to New Buffalo. It would have been okay, but we had shared with him that the winds were expected to change from the south to come from the NE, and not to be on the lake at that time. That didn’t stop him. After spending time with family and friends, he and his girlfriend proceeded back across the lake in 15 foot swells. I had the US Coast Guard, Marine Police, and IDNR on alert. USCG gave up their search and shared they will resume their search the next day. I’m sitting at the dock with our staff, and 4 captains who were sharing their stories trying to console me over Jack Daniels after losing our new boat and I hear the sound of the boat pulling into the marina. The girlfriend was hysterical and when I jumped on the boat she hugged me clinging to me for 20 minutes while consoling her. The boyfriend had nothing to say. I flew the dealer mechanic in from Indianapolis to put the boat back together and two days later someone else was on the boat. People were getting the not-so-bright idea of going out with 4-6 foot water (wakes) and wake jumping with it too. One of the lease-share holders allowed his girlfriend to stand up while jumping the wake and instead of her sitting down and holding the safety hand-hold opposite the captain’s chair, she elected to hang on to the windshield and she literally pulled the whole thing down onto her which shattered all over her. She was lucky and only had minor cuts, and a bruise on her bum. It scared the crap out of us. What will our clients do next to themselves and our boat? Better question, was it time to make a change?
So, with my love for classic cars in particular Tri-Five Chevrolets (1955, 1956, 1957 years), I found an ad on Craigslist looking to trade a 56 Chevy 2 door for a boat. The car owner sold his Sea Ray the previous year, but forgot to tell his wife. Bad move. Now she was making him sell his 56 Chevy in order to buy her a boat again. He was down in South Carolina, so we had a couple off days after the big Labor Day boating weekend and I took a road-trip. He collected toys and he was a giant and his wife was this little 4’11” sweetheart, who made the guy jump. We went for a ride, but I had to think about it. On my way home he called and asked if I was interested. He brought the car up to me and I took him for ride in the boat. He gave his wife a thrilling ride, since our boat had the power to pull up to 8 water skiers. We made the trade.
