A Tribute to Ted Szabo: A Community Pillar a brother!
Ted Szabo, a beloved community leader and dear friend, has tragically passed away. His loss is deeply felt by all who knew him.
I had the privilege of serving alongside Ted for many years at the Portage Park Chamber of Commerce. His dedication, energy, and positive outlook were instrumental in the chamber's success. As vice president and later president, Ted consistently delivered results with clarity and passion.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ted was a kind and generous soul with a wonderful sense of humor. We shared countless breakfasts at his favorite spot, Burgundy, where we would often discuss life, work, and the future. Even after he moved, our friendship remained strong.
Just before my recent trip to Japan, I met with Ted for breakfast. Despite his ongoing battle with cancer, he remained optimistic and full of life. Sadly, that was our last meeting.
I am heartbroken by Ted's passing and extend my deepest condolences to his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

At Osaka KIX Airport going Home.

My current trip to Okinawa, Fukuoka, and Osaka for karate and kobudo tournaments, as well as site visits, has been both educational and immensely successful. Japan's rich culture, coupled with the warmth and hospitality of its people, made this journey particularly special. The experience of training and competing in the homeland of karate deepened my appreciation for the art, while visiting historic sites added a profound sense of connection to the traditions that have shaped martial arts for generations.

Japan is a nation of contrasts, blending ancient customs with modern innovation. The landscapes, from the serene beauty of Okinawa’s beaches to the bustling energy of Osaka, are breathtaking. The food, renowned for its freshness and flavor, was an experience in itself—whether enjoying sushi in a small local eatery or savoring the unique dishes of each region.

Traveling on the JR (Japan Rail) network was another highlight, offering a seamless and efficient way to explore the country’s diverse cities and countryside. The entire trip reinforced my admiration for Japan's dedication to preserving its cultural heritage while embracing progress. This journey was not just about competition but about connecting with the spirit of Japan—a place where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony.

**Fukuoka, Japan**
Fukuoka holds a special place in my heart as the birthplace of Master Okazaki and the current home of Master Futamata, both of whom I had the honor of studying under. Their teachings have profoundly shaped my journey in karate, making Fukuoka a deeply meaningful city for me.
I am currently in Fukuoka with the ITKA Karate Global team, representing the USA and other countries, for an exciting karate tournament.

Okinawa, ITKA Karate Global Team: Exploring the Roots of Karate in Okinawa**

Okinawa Karate, Brief History of Karate's Origination in Okinawa:**

Karate originated on the Okinawan islands, influenced by a blend of native Okinawan fighting styles and techniques introduced through trade and cultural exchange with China. The early development of Karate is attributed to the indigenous martial arts of Okinawa, known as "te" (hand), and the Chinese martial art "kung fu." This fusion resulted in a unique martial art characterized by its striking techniques and self-defense methods.

In the early 20th century, Karate was formalized and popularized by masters such as Gichin Funakoshi, who introduced it to mainland Japan, where it evolved into the Karate practiced worldwide today. Okinawa remains a significant cultural and historical hub for Karate, preserving its traditional forms and techniques while continuing to inspire practitioners globally.

Okinawa.
today I visited Ichiban Street, located in Okinawa, is a vibrant and culturally rich destination that offers a unique blend of traditional and modern Japanese influences. This bustling street is renowned for its lively atmosphere and friendly locals, making it a welcoming spot for both tourists and residents.

One of Ichiban Street's highlights is its diverse culinary offerings. Visitors can enjoy an array of delicious Okinawan dishes, from savory local specialties like Okinawa soba and tempura to sweet treats such as sata andagi (deep-fried doughnuts) and traditional Okinawan sweets. The street is lined with various eateries, cafes, and food stalls that cater to different tastes and preferences.

In addition to its food and drink scene, Ichiban Street is known for its traditional clothing shops. Visitors can explore stores selling beautiful Okinawan kimonos, including the colorful and intricately designed bingata textiles, which are a hallmark of the island's cultural heritage. These garments are often worn during festivals and special occasions, showcasing the region's rich history and craftsmanship.

The architecture along Ichiban Street is also noteworthy, featuring a blend of traditional Okinawan styles and modern design. The sugar specialty architecture, characterized by its use of traditional materials and techniques, adds to the street's charm and historical ambiance. This distinctive architectural style reflects Okinawa's cultural evolution and provides a glimpse into the island's past.

Ichiban Street is not only a place to shop and dine but also a cultural hub where visitors can immerse themselves in the local way of life. The friendly atmosphere and the chance to experience traditional Okinawan customs make it a memorable destination for anyone looking to explore the essence of Okinawa.
I like ti thank International Traditional Karate Association and ITKA KARATE Glibal for this opportunity.
Mahmoud Bambouyanik.

**Arrival in Okinawa 🌸**
Last night, I arrived in Okinawa and was delighted to reconnect with old friends and colleagues from Italy and Germany. After a restful night's sleep, I woke up feeling energized and ready to dive into the world of karate.

This morning, I enjoyed my first meal in 24 hours, a wonderful buffet. Despite the abundance of food, I ate mindfully, knowing that many people around the world have far less. Fasting not only offers health benefits but also serves as a reminder of what it feels like to be hungry, something many of us are fortunate to experience only temporarily.

Loving every moment in Okinawa so far! 🙏

**"Embracing the Way of Karate: Lessons in Patience and Resilience from Japan"**

Traveling to Japan is always an enriching experience, offering insights into a culture that values discipline, respect, and personal growth. Japan, especially Okinawa, is the birthplace of karate, a martial art that embodies these very principles. The high standards in karate reflect the broader Japanese lifestyle and philosophy, where discipline and respect are paramount.

What stands out about Japan is not only the excellence in martial arts but also the genuine, supportive, and friendly nature of its people. Even though I travel to Japan frequently, this trip presented a unique challenge. Last night, a massive thunderstorm struck Tokyo, causing all flights at Haneda Airport to be canceled for safety reasons.

Finding a hotel was nearly impossible, as they were fully booked, and no taxis were available. Booking another flight was also challenging, with nothing available for the next few days, and any possible availability was extremely expensive. Despite these obstacles, I remained calm and in control, thanks to the harmony and support shared by everyone around me.

During this time, we experienced the true spirit of collaboration and patience. Many flights were canceled, making it difficult for us to move forward. While some friends invited me to a special place, I chose to stay behind to be among the first for standby. A few friends stayed with me until I asked them to leave, and a small group of us worked together to find a solution. We brainstormed and even considered traveling to another state before heading to Okinawa, despite the higher costs.

Good news finally came at 3:00 AM when I received a call confirming a direct flight to Okinawa at half the going price.

This experience teach us an important lesson: patience and a good attitude are crucial, especially when things are beyond our control. Being kind to others and caring for yourself will lighten the burden and contributed to intelectual esse.
The safety measures that prevented the plane from taking off were there to protect us, and for that, I am grateful.

Now, as I wait to board my flight, I wanted to share this experience. Traveling requires to be prepared and mindful, and Japan’s Karate as a part of Japan culture has much to teach us about facing challenges with grace and resilience.
