Circuit breakers ensure that property taxes do not consume an unreasonable portion of household incomes, thereby promoting housing affordability and economic stability for our most vulnerable residents. We must use these programs to help alleviate our tax crisis.

South Suburban homeowners are facing 50 percent increases in their assessments from CCAO. In places like Park Forest, the median homeowner is seeing their tax bill go up 50 percent. The Board of Review increased Commercial Assessments 13 percent but they couldn't keep up with these large increases. We must take action to protect these homeowners. I'm unveiling my plan soon.

Illinois ranks 50th in state in state support of schools. Local communities have to try to make up the difference in property taxes. In many communities, property tax burdens overwhelm taxpayers. Great to see legislators like Anthony DeLuca thinking about how to help taxpayers in overburdened communities. I'm releasing my own plan soon. Kudos to The Chicago Southland Journal for raising awareness of this issue.

Statement Condemning the Shooting Against Former President Trump
I am deeply horrified and saddened by the recent shooting targeting former President Donald J. Trump. This violent act is not only an attack on an individual but an assault on the very principles of democracy and the rule of law that our nation holds dear.
There is no place in America for such acts of violence. We must stand united in condemning this heinous act and ensure that justice is served swiftly and harshly. It is imperative that we uphold the values of our nation by promoting peace, dialogue, and respect for all individuals, regardless of political affiliation.
Our thoughts and prayers are with former President Trump and his family during this difficult time. Let us remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding our democracy against any form of violence or extremism.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Dr. Dennis Deer, Commissioner of Cook County's 2nd District.
Dr. Deer was a dedicated public servant whose lifelong commitment to healthcare, education, economic development, employment, training, and affordable housing made a lasting impact on our community. Groundbreaking Ceremony for Yollocalli Arts Center Marks a New Era for Little Village Youth
Little Village, Chicago – June 21, 2024 – Today, a significant milestone was reached as community leaders, artists, and residents gathered to break ground on the Yollocalli Arts Center, a new space dedicated to fostering creativity and empowerment among the youth of Little Village. The event was graced by the presence of Mayor Johnson, Congressman Garcia, Commissioner Cardenas, Alderman Sigcho Lopez, and other esteemed community leaders, marking a momentous occasion for the neighborhood.
The Yollocalli Arts Center, set to rise from the former firehouse at 2358 S Whipple, is the realization of a vision to transform this historic building into a vibrant hub for artistic expression and community engagement. Commissioner Cardenas, formerly an alderman, spearheaded this initiative, driven by a deep belief in the transformative power of art.
"Art has always been a powerful tool for self-expression and growth," said Commissioner Cardenas. "This center will provide a sanctuary for our youth, a place where their creativity can flourish and their voices can be heard. It will be a hub for artistic expression and community strength, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment."
During the ceremony, Commissioner Cardenas highlighted the importance of the center for the youth of Little Village. "To the youth of Little Village, this center is for you. It is a testament to your potential and your boundless creativity. Here, you will find the tools, guidance, and support to explore new horizons, to heal, and to grow. Let this be a place where your voices are heard, your talents are nurtured, and your dreams are realized."

It is a culmination of tireless efforts, collaboration, and the unwavering belief that the youth deserve the best opportunities to grow and succeed.
Commissioner Cardenas expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported the project, including artists, educators, community leaders, and partners. "Your dedication and passion have made this possible," he said. "Together, with the support of our community leaders and partners, we are building more than just an art center; we are building a brighter, more vibrant future for Little Village."
The Yollocalli Arts Center is set to become a cornerstone of the community, offering programs and resources that will nurture the talents and aspirations of young artists in Little Village. As construction begins, the community looks forward to the day when the center will open its doors and welcome the next generation of creators and leaders.
