July is Disability Pride Month, commemorating the passing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990. It is an opportunity to celebrate and honor the experiences, identities, contributions, and cultures of people with disabilities! 👩‍🦽👩‍🦯👩‍🦼

Women with disabilities face higher rates of homelessness, largely due to discrimination and lack of access to affordable and accessible housing. At Sarah's Circle, over 30% of our clients live with a physical disability. We take pride in operating accessible facilities and housing and offering resources for women with disabilities to navigate support services.

Sarah's Circle is committed to advocating for a more accessible, inclusive, and diverse world where every woman is empowered and has the tools she needs to lead a meaningful life. Join us in celebrating Disability Pride Month and supporting our mission! 🩵

In a disappointing ruling, the Supreme Court overturned two decisions from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that granted significant protections from punishment for people sleeping outdoors, allowing cities to arrest and fine individuals for camping and sleeping in public spaces. This decision reinforces the immediate need for more affordable housing. Sarah’s Circle believes housing, not criminalization, ends homelessness, and we remain committed to ensuring every woman has a safe and secure home of her own.

Happy Monday! 🩵 We recently hosted an Affirmation and Support Circle workshop with Andrea Cook from &Rise, and our clients were able to engage in meditation, group affirmation, and self-reflection. ✨ Participants also received survivor bracelets! One woman offered her reflections from the workshop and said, "Affirmations are so important. We think a house and a family and getting a job are important but without good thoughts in our mind, we can lose the house and family and our job."

Our Story

In 1979, three women in the Uptown neighborhood saw the plight of women who were homeless. They were often cold and seeking shelter, hungry, highly vulnerable, and alone. Sarah’s Circle was started with compassion and spirit of service, and our agency continues to be a safe, welcoming place for women experiencing homelessness. With our resources and services, women are able to access shelter, food, showers, community, and more.

From our humble beginning, Sarah’s Circle has grown to an agency providing a full continuum of services, but our mission remains the same. We serve women who are homeless, with a focus on transitioning women from homelessness into permanent housing.

After 40 years of service, Sarah’s Circle is still growing to meet the needs of women. Over 2,000 women in Chicago will be homeless tonight. With the continued loss of affordable housing in our communities, Sarah’s Circle is increasingly focused on permanent supportive housing solutions.

Sarah’s Circle is able to meet this challenge head on by completing a new facility in the fall of 2020. Here, Sarah’s Circle will provide 38 units of Permanent Supportive Housing, more program space, and an upgraded space for the Interim Housing Program.
