US Military Says National Security Depends on ‘Forever Chemicals’ 12/06/2023

Complex Dilemma: U.S. Military's Dependence on 'Forever Chemicals'

The Department of Defense has declared its reliance on PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), known as 'forever chemicals', for numerous military applications, from uniforms to microelectronics. However, this dependence is under scrutiny due to the serious health risks associated with PFAS, including cancer and other health problems.

Despite these concerns, the Pentagon argues that eliminating PFAS would severely impact military readiness and national security. PFAS are integral to major weapon systems, fire suppression systems on Navy ships, and various other military technologies.

Balancing health risks and national security needs, the Defense Department is committed to phasing out nonessential PFAS uses. Meanwhile, efforts to find alternatives for essential uses continue. The situation highlights the complex intersection of environmental health and defense requirements.

This situation raises critical questions about managing such substances while safeguarding both public health and national security.

US Military Says National Security Depends on ‘Forever Chemicals’ The Department of Defense relies on hundreds, if not thousands, of weapons and products such as uniforms, batteries, and microelectronics that contain PFAS, a family of chemicals linked to serious health conditions.

VA Plans Outreach to Screen 3 Million More Veterans for Toxic Exposures 12/04/2023

Attention Veterans: Important Health Screening Update from the VA!

The Department of Veterans Affairs is ramping up its efforts to screen nearly 3 million veterans for possible exposure to environmental hazards. This initiative, part of the PACT Act, aims to identify and address health concerns related to toxic exposures such as burn pits, Agent Orange, and other pollutants.

VA Under Secretary for Health, Dr. Shereef Elnahal, emphasizes the importance of this extensive outreach to ensure all enrolled veterans receive these crucial screenings, which will be conducted at least every five years. The goal is not just to identify potential health risks but to foster a stronger relationship between veterans and VA healthcare services.

The screening involves a brief set of questions by a medical provider, focusing on the veterans' potential exposure to toxic substances and any related health concerns. If any issues are identified, veterans will be referred for further care.

This effort underlines the VA's commitment to veteran care and the health implications of hazardous material exposure. Dr. Elnahal assures that VA clinicians are well-trained to address these concerns, with 97% having completed PACT Act clinical training.

Remember, regular health screenings can be vital in detecting and managing health issues early. We encourage all veterans to take advantage of this opportunity for their well-being.
