IF YOU CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT SYMPTOMS, IT CAN CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE OUTLOOK ON HEALTH AND HEALING!

Let's look at 3 common symptoms:
COUGH
FEVER
INFLAMMATION

First let's look at what mainstream medicine typically tells you to do with these 3 (acute not chronic) symptoms:
COUGH - take a cough suppressant
FEVER - take a fever reducer
INFLAMMATION - take an anti-inflammatory
Goal = help you "feel" better by suppressing symptoms.

Now let's look at what your body is attempting to do with these 3 symptoms:
COUGH - Your body is trying to get rid of something that is irritating it. This is a protective measure by your body.

FEVER - your body raises its temperature to kill off bacteria and viruses.

INFLAMMATION - your body is attempting to heal from an injury or infection through an immune response.

GOAL = Allow your body to heal in the short term naturally the way it was intended which in turn keeps it healthier and allows it to heal better in the long term.

NOW LET'S DO A LITTLE CRITICAL THINKING:
If those 3 symptoms are all there to help your body heal from an acute injury, infection, etc. and you suppress those symptoms, do you think that might suppress your body's ability to heal?

The logical AND scientific answer is, YES!

The next time your body is expressing acute (not chronic) symptoms you get to choose whether or not you want to "feel" better by sacrificing your body's ability to heal OR do you want your body to do what it was designed by God to do and allow it to express symptoms so you can properly heal?

C. It's impossible to build muscle after the age of 40, you can only try to maintain some of what you have.

D. Muscle is one of the top predictors of lifespan and healthspan.

E. Sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) is now seen in teenagers due to incredibly sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EATING PLAN

Many people fall into the trap (thanks to mis-leading and just plain false information) that things like red meat always cause inflammation in the body. This can be true, but it also can be very false.
This is where the source of the food and quality comes into play.

You can take 2 steaks side by side that look the same and taste almost identical.
One of those steaks comes from an animal fed grains and that steak is HIGHLY inflammatory.

The other steak comes from an animal that is 100% grass-fed and finished and that steak is Anti-inflammatory.

SOURCE AND QUALITY ARE KEY when making food choices. When buying red meat always purchase from a farmer that has 100% grass-fed and finished animals.

If you are in the Chippewa Valley area some of my favorite local farms are:
Together Farms
Blaeser Farms
Farm Sweet Farm LLC
NorthStar Bison
Seibel's Organic Meats, LLC

Over the past 25 years of working with thousands of patients I have noticed the people that have lasting lifestyle changes are those that have a "BIG WHY".

A "BIG WHY" is the reason behind why you choose to work out even when you don't feel like it or why you choose to not eat highly processed foods on a regular basis even if they taste good.

When you attach to something bigger than yourself it becomes easier (not easy).

My BIG WHY = I want to leave a legacy of generational health, wealth and love.

WHAT IS YOUR BIG WHY?

HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO I NEED PER DAY? (SIMPLIFIED)
Bare minimum = ~55% of body weight in grams
Burn Fat = ~80%
Build or maintain muscle = ~125%

03/28/2024

HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO I NEED PER DAY??

I get this question a lot!

The answer depends on your health goals.

Most people when they think protein they think muscle growth. Protein is essential for so many functions in the body besides building muscle. A few examples are:
Thyroid
Gut
Brain
Adrenal Glands
Bones
Heart

The USDA says the minimum requirements for an average adult is 56 grams per day for men and 46 grams per day for women. Keep in mind this is minimum but still CRAZY low if you want to be healthy.

The following is the consensus of many natural health experts.

If you want to support overall health & longevity, you should consume a bare minimum of 50-60% of your body weight in grams of high-quality complete whole-food protein per day. (Remember, we require more as we age because you lose muscle as you age if you aren't actively trying to maintain or build muscle)

If your goal is to burn fat you need to up that to about 75-85% of your body weight in grams of high-quality complete whole-food protein per day. You should also replace some of the carbs (especially processed ones) with protein to increase fat burning.

If you are trying to gain or maintain muscle (especially over the age of 40) then you need to up your protein intake to a minimum of 100% and up to 150% of your body weight per day. My goal is 150% of my body weight daily but that is combined with daily strength training and a focus on HIGH-quality complete whole-food proteins (see my post on 3.26.24 for quality).

Some of the best whole food complete proteins are:
Free range Eggs (chicken and other birds)
100% grass-fed beef and other red meat
Wild Caught Salmon
Free Range organic chickens and turkeys

LET'S TALK PROTEIN!!!!!!
Day 1 of......?

Over the next few days, I'll address the following and maybe more:
QUALITY
QUANTITY
ABSORPTION RATES
TIMING
PROTEIN POWDERS VS. WHOLE FOOD PROTEIN
ANIMAL PROTEIN VS. PLANT PROTEIN
BRANCH CHAIN AMINO ACIDS VS. ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS

*WARNING - this is a long, information filled post but if you want to make some simple healthier choices, I believe it's worth the 2-minute read.

As with almost any discussion, there is SOOOO much we could talk about, but I am going to simplify each topic as much as possible.

Let's start the discussion with QUALITY. This is what I feel to be the most overlooked part of the protein discussion in the general public and in my opinion, the most important.

QUALITY:
"YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT BUT YOU ARE ALSO WHAT YOU EAT, ATE"
If given the choice between eating store bought, commercially raised GMO grain-fed, antibiotic injected animal products (meat, eggs, dairy) or being a vegetarian, I would ABSOLUTELY choose to be a vegetarian. Thank God I don't have to make that choice and neither do you. There are countless better and GREAT options out there for protein that is high quality.

If given the choice of only 1 food for the rest of my life, what would it be?
Organic, 100% Grass-Fed Red Meat!!!

Here are some simple rules to follow for improving the quality of your protein starting with best case scenario to worst. (I'm saving dairy details for a different discussion)

BEST*
Local, organic, 100% grass-fed beef or another red meat & dairy
Local, organic free-range chickens, turkeys and other birds and eggs.
Wild Caught Alaskan Sockeye Salmon (the only 100% legit store-bought fish) or a local trusted source of wild-caught Alaskan fish like Together Farms where you can find an AMAZING selection of trusted wild-caught Alaskan fish as well as many other great protein and other choices, including the only pork products that my family will consume.

*Save money by purchasing in bulk, directly from your trusted local farmer.

BETTER (*sometimes as good as best)
Local, 100% grass-fed beef or another red meat & dairy
Local, free-range chickens, turkeys and other birds and eggs.

*If you know and trust the farmer you are purchasing from this can be just as good as the organic protein sources because they might be doing all of the same things but have just chosen not to pay for the organic labeling requirements.

GOOD (*maybe?)
Store bought commercially raised, organic, 100% grass-fed beef or another red meat & dairy.
Local, organic free-range chickens, turkeys and other birds and eggs.
*The reason this is a maybe is because we know the big commercial food industry cuts corners and lies as often as possible to the consumer. This is why I choose non-organic local over organic store-bought commercial animal products 100% of the time.

WORST
Commercial protein, filled full of GMO grains, pumped full of anti-biotics, growth hormones and other disease-causing toxic crap.
DO NOT TRUST THE LABELS!!!!!

A couple of VERY key factors to be aware of.
1. Grass-Fed vs. Grain-Fed. These are SOOOOO different in nutrient content and quality fat content that they shouldn't even be considered the same food.
Grass-fed = healing to the body
Grain-fed = disease causing (this is where red meat gets a bad rap because they are feeding the animal something it isn't designed to eat. As a result, the animal products become inflammatory to the human body instead of healing) This of course is how they trick you with science when you watch a documentary or read something about meat being bad for you. IT ABSOLUTELY IS when it's commercial crap. DON'T FALL FOR THE PROPAGANDA

*100% grass-fed is KEY - when farmers "finish" even with 1 month of grain feeding it can completely undo all of the grass-fed benefits. Always ask if the animal is 100% grass-fed or if its grain "finished".

What about hunting and fishing?????
Great question!

This is for sure always going to be better than commercial crap but what often gets overlooked is, "YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT, ATE"
For example - if you shoot a deer that is feeding on GMO corn and soy all day long, that meat has a very different nutrient profile than shooting an elk in the mountains of Colorado.

When it comes to fish, how toxic is the body of water you are fishing? (I'll still take this any day over farmed fish fed GMO corn and soy and chemical food colorings)

Here are some great options in the Chippewa Valley area.

Farm Sweet Farm LLC
NorthStar Bison
Blaeser Farms
Larry Schultz Organic Farm
