Happy from the Taft Museum of Art! 🎆
Rarely displayed—this portrait of President William Howard Taft—one of a set of thirty miniature presidential portraits, reflects Charles and Anna Taft’s strong interest in presidential history, stemming from their family’s patriotism and devotion to public service. Reviving an art form that began to disappear as photography became more common, the artists replicated the (shading with tiny lines), coloring, and detail of 18th- and early 19th-century miniatures. This set reproduces the best-known likenesses of the first 30 American based on oil portraits and official photographs.
Please note, the museum is closed today for the holiday but will resume regular hours tomorrow, Friday, July 5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m..

Celebrating and honoring the legacy of Carol and William "Bill" Eckerle 🙏
Last fall, the Taft Museum of Art alongside the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Cincinnati Museum Center received $6M gifts each to support each institution's endowment from the legacy of Carol and William "Bill" Eckerle, in a generous demonstration of their belief in access to culture and education for every member of our community. Last night, they were honored by Greater Cincinnati Planned Giving Council and received a Voices of Giving Award at their 26th Annual Awards Ceremony!
We are so grateful to the Eckerles for their support of our museum and our community, and to the Greater Cincinnati Planned Giving Council for honoring their generosity.

Celebrating and honoring Juneteenth 🙏
On this day (June 19) in 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Today, we celebrate and seek to honor the art and history of Black liberation in our museum and in our community.
One such legacy is that of Robert S. Duncanson (1821–1872), who painted a series of murals in the Taft’s foyer, pictured here. We continue to honor his legacy through our Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program, which recognizes the achievements of a contemporary Black American artist through public programming, school visits, and more!
Please note: the museum is closed today in observance of the holiday, and will be open again tomorrow, Thursday, June 20 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Explore the magic and history of early photography in our new special exhibition (and in this article written by our team!) 📸
"A photograph is the culmination of many steps, beginning with a photographer’s vision and, for the earliest images, a camera exposure time ranging from several seconds to several minutes. Technology, chemistry, darkroom manipulation, and printing techniques can also play a role in the appearance of a photographic image. Even today, when snapping a photo with a smartphone is instantaneous, a well-made photograph involves much skill and artistry. 'Moment in Time: A Legacy of Photographs / Works from the Bank of America Collection' offers us the opportunity to examine, up close, many fascinating photographic processes from the pre-digital age.

The Taft Museum of Art is a living landmark tucked away in downtown Cincinnati, where art and history live on the walls—and in the walls. Built around 1820 as a private home for several of Cincinnati's most prominent citizens, the Taft Museum of Art is now one of the finest small art museums in America and holds National Historic Landmark status for its historic house and Duncanson murals.
Here, you’ll find gems of history nestled into every nook and cranny in our period-inspired rooms—each their own canvas of creativity—that surrounds you in stories that have endured for generations. Our 200-year-old house holds an extensive collection of European and American masterworks, 17th-19th century watches, Chinese porcelains, and French Renaissance enamels. The collection features iconic artists including Rembrandt, Hals, Goya, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Turner, Ingres, Whistler, and Sargent as well as 19th-century American furniture and the most significant pre–Civil War domestic murals in the United States.
Throughout our 2001-2004 expansion, guests can also always enjoy special exhibitions, the historic outdoor garden, our Museum Shop and Lindner Family Café, events and programming for all ages, and complimentary on-site parking.
