Meet Major McNeil who started the Major R. McNeil Scholarship Endowment!

From elementary school in the 1950s through high school graduation in Zanesville, Ohio, I never saw an African-American teacher or any other individual contributor to academic development within the school setting who actually looked like me. To me, that presented a serious problem that I wanted to impact.

In 1960, my sister Lois who was 10 months older than I, enrolled at Central State College, Wilberforce, Ohio with the intention of becoming the best teacher for all the students she served. This influenced my choice to become an educator.

Experiencing inequities in education, may either deform an individual or motivate the spirit to seek opportunities. Central State College was the nearest HBCU to where I lived, and its mear existence represented opportunity for me.

My high school English and History teachers, along with several caring community people who had not had an opportunity to attend college, joined with my parents; they were determined to leverage the access promised by the Central State experience for me. From that point forward, it’s been all about giving back and paying forward in the form of service. The value of service was further informed by my experiences as a teacher, coach, principal and Assistant Superintendent in the Cincinnati Public Schools.

The Major R. McNeil Scholarship Fund located at the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, has been a primary vehicle for paying service forward. This scholarship, created by Withrow High School students, Class of 1984,

continues to provide opportunities and financial support for Withrow High School student graduates who express an interest in furthering their formal education.

Therefore, my mantra:
Motivation- Opportunity- Access - Service

Meet Lea Brinker who started the Lea Brinker STEM and Workforce Development Scholarship Fund!

I always wanted to be a teacher. I think this is due to the many wonderful teachers I had throughout my growing years. My first grade teacher told my parents that I was trying to teach the 2nd graders (we had a split class) how to read! Not that I remember that, but Sister Gabriel did! After years in Catholic schools, I ended up at Western Hills High School, which I think is where I was always meant to be. That experience changed me in so many positive ways. That’s why I’m trying to give back through scholarships I provide through the CSF. Thanks to all my colleagues and students who gave my life purpose and meaning.

Meet Mike Finnegan who started the Mike Finnegan Health and Wellness Scholarship Fund at CSF!

My interest in teaching came to me my senior year of high school. I recall the poor quality of physical education I received and thought to myself if ever I get the opportunity I’m going to teach with such passion and commitment that all my students will be tended to the way they all deserve. After toiling to pay my way through 6 years of college at Kent State University I applied to the United States Peace Corps and was assigned to Niger West Africa. I learned to immerse myself in culture and teaching there and afterwards in Japan where I taught two years. Returning to the states I took my first teaching job with Cincinnati Public schools where I taught in Northside at Schwab Middle School for 14 years then when the opportunity opened to build a new fitness centered curriculum at Withrow High School I jumped at the challenge. Over the last 20 years we built an exemplary program that was cutting edge and progressive. I recall the decision to retire and I thought to myself what else can I give this profession I love so much. Teaching had filled my soul like no other it was truly the toughest job I’d ever loved. I decide to combine my love of serving and cycling by riding my bike across the United States from Santa Monica California to Washington DC and using that adventure to raise money for a legacy scholarship at Withrow High. That was life changing and icing on the cake as the Cincinnati community donated as I rode across this amazing country nearly $45,000 later I had the softest landing an educator could have ever asked for. Education has blessed and enriched my life beyond measure.

Meet CSF Board Member, Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, and History Professor at Northern Kentucky University, Dr. Eric R. Jackson!

Why do I teach? Teaching is my calling, a calling rooted in love, passion, and imagination. As a teacher on the college level for over thirty years, I see no end to improvement, no arrival, and no completion. I want to continue to be that teacher who, although being in the classroom for decades, still leaves each class session asking how the next time I teach that particular topic or subject, to better engage and inspire my students. As a history professor/teacher I also want my students to make connections. On the one hand, I want them to develop and articulate a clear and coherent historical narrative. More specifically, I want the students who enroll in my courses to make connections between events, people, and institutions as well as to understand the forces of “cause and effect” and “change over time.” Sometimes, the simplest teaching techniques are the best. Thus, I use charts, diagrams, artwork, short videos, etc. to show these various relationships. Also important in this area is that my students must routinely maintain a timeline on different levels just to connect the different events, topics, and people.

During the 1983 season, the Cincinnati Reds established the Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund to honor #5 upon his retirement as one of the greatest players in the team’s history. The Red’s desire was to create a perpetual remembrance of Johnny’s contributions to the Cincinnati community, The Southeastern portion of Ohio, and his hometown Binger, Oklahoma. The Fund is established with the Greater Cincinnati Foundation with the Fifth Third Bank serving as Trustee.

The Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund awards renewable scholarships to students who are residents of the Greater Cincinnati area or Binger, OK and who have actively participated in athletics throughout high school and are obtaining an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
