Our last research seminar of the semester will be held tomorrow at 2:30pm in MMCS 242, featuring Dr. Brad Fox on "Happy and Elated Numbers"
Two of our students presented at the TN Academy of Sciences Conference last week at Cumberland University. Jackson Lewis earned 2nd place in the Math and CS session with “Minimal Surfaces: An Introduction to Differential Geometry," and William Keener's "Differential Geometry from a Calculus Perspective" earned 4th place in that session. Their projects were both mentored by Dr. Ben Ntatin.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics honored our top students yesterday, presenting awards for their outstanding academic achievement and research success. Congratulations to the following recipients!
- Kemeliz Fuentes, who will soon earn a degree in Data Science, the recipient of our Department's Outstanding Senior Award
- Kyra Lander, a second-year Math Education major, for earning our department's Outstanding Sophomore/Junior Award
- Christine Jator, who is in her third year of our Data Science program, for being this year's recipient of the Nell Rayburn High Impact Practice Award
-Anthony Thai and Monsuru Durojaiye for earning the Graduate Student Awards for our Mathematical Finance program
- Gabrielle Burnett and Megan Oelgoetz who received the Graduate Student Award for our Master's program in Predictive Analytics
- Alice Guardo and Leah Winter who earned the Graduate Student Awards for our Mathematics Instruction program
The last Math & Stats Research Seminar of the semester will be in one week on Thursday 4/25 at 2:30pm in MMCS 242. Dr. Brad Fox will be presenting on the fun number theory/recreational math topic of "Happy and Elated Numbers"

Exciting opportunity for our department chair Dr. Jackie Vogel, as she will be presenting this Friday at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. Her talk on an "Analysis of Proportional Reasoning for Students" will be live as part of the Mathematics Seminar Series and on Zoom at the link in the flyer.
APSU hosted over 250 students this week for each of the TMTA Middle School and High School Mathematics Contests. Great job to all the competitors, and thanks to all the faculty and volunteers who helped run the contest!

Four math students presented a poster at the Student Research Symposium yesterday: Briauna Bonney and Sage Patten on Odd Graceful Labelings with Dr. Fox, Samuel Whitaker on Analysis of Heat Waves in Phoenix, and Autumn Schneider on Oil Production and Price in the US with Dr. Sahi. Excellent work by these students and their research mentors!
Three of our graduate students presented at the APSU Student Research Symposium: Olayinka Ugwu - Study of U.S. Crude Oil Prices and Geopoliticial Factors, Megan Oelgoetz - Time Series Model to Predict Gastrointestinal Illnesses in Tennessee, and Monsuru Durojaiye - Quantifying Credit Risk in the Lending Industry. Great work by them and their research mentor Dr. Sahi!
Today is APSU's Student Research Symposium. We have three graduate students giving oral presentations at 9:20am in the MUC and four undergraduate students with poster presentations between 2pm and 4pm this afternoon
Next Tuesday April 9th, the Cigna Group is hosting an information session with our students about their Actuarial Executive Development Program. This is a great opportunity for students interested in this field from 2:30 - 4:30 pm in Sundquist E106A.

Next Wednesday APSU alum Dr. Daniel Jeske, a Professor and Vice Provost at UC-Riverside, will return to campus as a speaker at the Math & Stats Research Seminar. His talk on "Improving the Usefulness of Statistical Classifiers" will be at 3:30pm in Maynard 244.
We had a great turnout of students at yesterday's Math & Stats Industry Seminar. Our speaker was Austin Wheeler, an APSU alum who works as a Senior Business Information Analyst at Elevance Health.

A terrific group of 3 faculty and 12 students attended the MAA Southeast Section Conference at UT-Knoxville this weekend. Four of the students - William Keener, Ben Bruyns, Jackson Lewis, and Jazz Kreuser - competed in the Math Jeopardy competition.
Four students presented in the student or contributed paper sessions - Samuel Whitaker, Olayinka Ugwu, Megan Oelgoetz, and Monsuru Durojaiye - while Jackson Lewis presented in the student poster session.
And three of our Math professors presented on their research or innovative teaching methods - Drs. Nicholas Kirby, Kelly Buch, and Brad Fox.
