Landscape staffers “Cat” Pate and Kevin Pruitt get an early start on this 🥶 Monday morning to replace a sprinkler head and swing joint in Bowman Field’s irrigation system.
The excitement on Bowman Field continues to grow as students complete their float builds for this year’s Homecoming game. University Facilities and the Office of Environmental Safety have been on hand to provide assistance and to promote safety first throughout construction.
After many months of construction, Williamson Road is set to reopen today at close of business. However, finishing touches to the amazing new videoboard are still being made. Technicians will continue to work each night from 8/17 to 8/18 between the hours of 10 pm and 6 am. To ensure a safe work zone, Williamson will be one-lane between Fort Hill and Avenue of Champions intersections with flaggers present to direct two-way traffic.
❗Public Service Announcement❗
The speed limit has changed on Perimeter Road at Cherry Road to Hwy 76. The speed is now 25MPH. Keep this in mind as you return to campus this month. Due to multiple work sites along Perimeter Road, you may encounter construction equipment entering the roadway while crews are working. Clemson University Police Department's priority is the safety of everyone, and we ask you to always be mindful as you are driving.
Construction along Perimeter Road between Cherry Road and Highway 76 has officially begun. Work will initially occur alongside Perimeter. Drivers should expect temporary lane closures from time to time, with flaggers present to guide traffic. To encourage safe travel through the construction area, speeding fines will be increased within work zones during this time.
University Facilities recently collaborated with the Solid Green Club in planting new trees on campus. The Landscape Services Arbor Crew assisted students in planting two trees on either side of the entrance to Earle Hall. Solid Green is looking forward to making new campus tree plantings a reoccurring, yearly event. 🌳
To enhance pedestrian safety and ease congestion, University Facilities will begin work in March to widen Perimeter Road from 2 lanes to 4 between Highway 76 and Cherry Road. The change will benefit commuters during heavy traffic periods in the morning and afternoon. A large multiuse path for walking, running and cycling will be included which connects to the Green Crescent Trail. Full details can be found at Clemson News. https://bit.ly/34A1vjg
In honor of Arbor Day, the University Facilities Landscape Services department hosted a tree planting ceremony along the west side of Lee Hall. Arbor Day is celebrated in South Carolina on the first Friday in December, signifying the beginning of tree planting season in our state which spans from December to February.
As part of Solid Green Day, students and staff volunteered to replant and perform maintenance on the bioretention basin located near Lot E-21. Their time and effort helped restore this essential feature to the landscape which helps reduce harmful stormwater runoff from entering our waterways. This Veterans Day University Facilities offered grab-and-go breakfast items to express its appreciation to service members among our staff. We’re honored to have them in our organization and enjoyed learning more about their time in the military. Here are just a few of the veterans within the Facilities family.
Primarily used as a service road, Lake Drive is also a pleasant pedestrian path for exercise and walking our pets along Lake Hartwell. University Facilities is looking for help from the Clemson community to keep it safe and clean for everyone to use and enjoy. Being aware of vehicular traffic, keeping furry friends leashed 🐕 and picking up after them are very helpful to this end. You can read more about what’s at stake and how you can help at the University Facilities blog: https://bit.ly/3mNnUQU
As fall approaches, changing temperatures can reveal weaknesses in our campus roadways. Potholes, the scourge of the Clemson commuter, can pop-up overnight and require a rapid response to prevent wear and tear to drivers' vehicles. They also represent a safety issue as travelers seek to avoid them, sometimes exiting their lane suddenly to do so. You can help us prevent these issues by reporting potholes you encounter using our ArcGIS-powered Pothole Survey. https://arcg.is/1f8nyv.
Construction crews will be refreshing pavement markings throughout campus from Wednesday, August 4th to Friday, August 6th. The project will result in short term single-lane closures around areas of work.
Starting 7/19 Facilities will begin to clean the exterior surfaces of multiple buildings on campus. Major cleaning such as pressure washing will take place after 5 pm each day. Minor work may take place during the morning and afternoon. The project is expected to take 2 months to complete.
University Facilities recently teamed up with staff from Clemson Libraries to plant flowers and greenery within the round-about on South Palmetto Boulevard, just outside of the Watt Family Innovation Center. Dean of Libraries Christopher Cox was interested in a service project for his staff that could beautify the space and Landscape Services was happy to help. Our Greenhouse Specialist Emily Preston assisted with the design and obtaining plants. Our Core Campus crew prepped the ground with compost generated by Clemson Recycling at the Cherry Crossing Research Facility. The Clemson Libraries team arrived on a beautiful Thursday morning and proceeded to contribute their time and energy into the project, resulting in a campus improvement that immediately livens the surrounding area.
Our group loves working on collaborations such as these and we’re very grateful to Dean Cox and the Clemson Libraries staff for their idea and effort in bringing it to life.
Some fear snakes, but Melanie Moore Brooks from our Landscape Services department doesn’t. She met her ‘little buddy’, a De Kay’s Brown Snake, in a campus flower bed she was tending.

Big building projects typically have big impacts, but smaller projects are equally as important to University Facilities. One example being the installation of a new lighting system to help solidify the results from a research facility. Over at the Aquatic Animal Research Laboratory in Clemson, research which relies on breeding zebrafish and other small fish was being interrupted by unreliable lighting, so University Facilities worked with the facility director to install a new system that would meet their needs.
