CBSHS Friday Feature: Kaileigh Byrne, associate professor in the Clemson University Dept. of Psychology and director of Clemson’s Cognition and Decision Science Lab, has been appointed to the newest cohort of Dr. Wallace R. Roy Distinguished Professors for a three-year term. The professorship will allow her to expand her research on peer recovery coaching interventions for patients hospitalized with medical complications from alcohol use disorder. Read to learn more!
Roy Professorships support research on Alzheimer’s, cancer, substance abuse disorders Kaileigh Byrne, Feng Ding and Hugo Sanabria received three-year appointments as Dr. Wallace R. Roy Distinguished Professors. The professorships provide support for translational research partnerships between Clemson faculty members and Prisma Health or other health system providers.

Psychology major Savannah Diggett used an Honors Educational Enrichment Travel Grant to teach English to children in Indonesia. She had the opportunity to live with a local family to get a taste of their culture and lifestyle and says she learned so much from her time there – and that it was an experience she will never forget!
Educational Enrichment Travel grants are designed to fund out of the classroom, life-changing summer break experiences that take place away from Clemson and the upstate of South Carolina. These grants help students take part in unpaid internships, research, public service projects, or other significant undertakings that are consistent with a student’s educational or career goals.

Two of our faculty from the Clemson University Dept. of Psychology and a Clemson University School of Nursing professor have been awarded seed grants for human factors research, which in this context means research on how medical professionals work and care for patients. They have teamed up with Prisma Health physicians and nurses as well as researchers from Clemson University Industrial Engineering to optimize hospital discharge times, ease nurse manager stressors and evaluate and improve emergency physician workloads. Clemson, Prisma Health researchers receive funding to examine health care scenarios through human factors research lens Six teams of researchers and health care providers have received funding to improve various hospital procedures, from discharging patients to improving the efficiency of creating staff schedules through human factors research.
Five years ago, Clemson University Department of Public Health Sciences professor Sarah Griffin co-led a team of public health researchers and Clemson Extension Rural Health and Nutrition agents to address obesity in three rural counties in South Carolina. Because the team, known as the Healthy Options Program team, was able to assist more than 15,000 people in three counties, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has funded a five-year, $3.8 million effort to expand the program from three to ten counties.

Wiley Jenkins has been appointed chair of the Clemson University Department of Public Health Sciences! He joins Clemson from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine where he served as interim chair of the Department of Population Science and Policy. Prior to his appointment as interim chair, he worked in the department as a professor and chief of epidemiology and biostatistics. He has served in faculty, research and administrative positions in the public health field for more than 30 years. Read to learn more!
