Political science and sustainability studies major Kaitlyn Metz spent the first part of her summer as an intern with the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
Her policy portfolio included financial institutions, export/import controls, housing developments, and cryptocurrency regulations. Kaitlyn was able to attend hearings and briefings alongside the Ranking Member, where she was tasked with writing reports, drafting memos, and conducting research.
Outside of the office, she was able to explore the Washington D.C. area with new friends, who she says truly made her summer! She especially enjoyed attending political receptions, going to farmers' markets, watching the Nationals play, and exploring the diverse food scene. Kaitlyn says her summer has truly been incredible!
Her internship was supported by an Honors College Educational Enrichment Travel Grant, which funds out of the classroom, life-changing summer break experiences that take place away from Clemson and the Upstate of South Carolina.

Last month, our National Scholars were joined by Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Robert H. Jones on their trips to Germany and Greenland!
Nine first-year National Scholars traveled to Germany and 14 others visited Greenland through study-travel experiences which were designed to help the scholars develop intercultural competencies, grow personally and intellectually, and build community within and across their scholar cohort.
Provost Jones joined each group for parts of their travels, giving them the unparalleled opportunity to engage with and learn from the University's chief academic officer! Read the story for details.

Honors students Mercy Crapps, Ryan Mehlem and Natalia Nortz recently won $1,000 each for their proposal to design a mobile STEM academy toolkit providing resources, volunteer support and community outreach to students in rural South Carolina schools.
The trio's proposal was submitted to the Pay It Forward program, sponsored by South Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives (South Carolina Living), who surprised them with a check presentation in April.
As science majors (and Dixon Global Policy Scholars), Mercy, Ryan and Natalia say they know from their own childhoods that experiential learning tools can build a passion for STEM in students, especially those in middle school.
The team's faculty advisor Dr. Jeff Fine, who runs the Dixon GPS program while also serving as our Senior Associate Dean, also won $500.
The students plan to use a portion of their prize winnings to set up a 501c charity organization that could compete for larger education grant programs - and make their proposal a reality.
Help us congratulate Mercy, Ryan, Natalia and Dr. Fine on their achievement!

Happy summer, Honors students and families!
We’re not totally sure, but we think this is the most remote place the NSP has ever raised the tiger rag!
The 2021 and 2022 cohorts are in Greenland! The group, along with Assoc. Dir. Kris and Prof. Todd Anderson, landed on Friday for a trip that is capping off their spring class titled “Art and Climate Change in the Arctic.” The first stop was the Greenland Ice Sheet, which covers 80% of the country and is the largest sheet in the world after Antarctica.
We are so thrilled to be able to offer experiential learning opportunities like these for our scholars.

He shared his career trajectory, including what helped set him up to succeed and how to position yourself to take advantage of “lucky breaks.”
His advice was to take risks, be persistent, and use internships to help you decide what career path is right for you.
Our alumni speaker series is a monthly event that allows Honors students to network with and learn from Honors alumni — and is just one way in which we work to create an Honors student experience that is second to none.

Nearly 20 years ago, Clemson alumna and former employee Marty Duckenfield founded the Duckenfield Scholars Program in collaboration with the Clemson University Honors College.
Duckenfield Scholars travel to and study at Oxford University for a summer and later become a part of a community of high-achieving students and program alumni cultivated by Marty herself.
Since 2005, the program has sent more than 30 students to Oxford for a five-week summer session where they study either environmental studies, English and English literature studies or medieval studies. And when they return, they have a new-found community, with Marty at its head.
Marty considers the Duckenfield Scholars as part of her “extended family.” Likewise, the Scholars refer to her as an “additional grandmother” and lifelong “cheerleader” even after they graduate from Clemson.
The scholarship serves as a tribute to Duckenfield's late husband, Christopher J. Duckenfield, who last served as the Vice Provost for Computing and Information Technology and was inspired by the experience the couple shared while studying at Oxford, where they met in 1965.

Clemson Honors and National Scholars Program alumnus Casey Hancock has always been a jack of all trades. Building off his habit of being extremely involved during his time at Clemson through various academic endeavors, study abroad trips, clubs, honors fraternities and service initiatives, he continues to be a leader within numerous fields in his professional life.
18 years post-Clemson, Hancock currently serves as the Mayor of his hometown, Hartsville, SC, runs a successful consulting business, and co-founded and manages a popular local brewery.
Hancock attributed his success across his three lines of work to the interdisciplinary experience he received from the Clemson University Honors College.
“The programs, introductions and connections that the Honors College makes between students and people of different disciplines are unparalleled. Those interactions and activities teach you how to think, how to question and how to talk, as well as how to listen and exchange ideas that challenge what you either know or think you know,” said Hancock.
Hancock recently returned to Clemson to share the story of what he calls his “journey through life” at an Honors College Speaker Series event.
His biggest piece of advice for current Clemson students? Do something that challenges you to think differently or that requires different perspectives to figure out. Those experiences are what help you grow - as a person and a leader.

Today the Honors College hosted this month's Alumni Speaker Series event with Clemson Honors alumni Grace Greene Simmons ('17), Dylan Erikson ('20), and Kerry Barrowclough ('20), who shared their experiences from Clemson Honors to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Ms. Greene attended the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law, and subsequently clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Erikson worked at the Department of Justice and currently attends New York University School of Law, and he completed an internship at the U.S. Supreme Court in the office of the Chief Justice during his time as a Clemson Honors student. Ms. Barrowclough works as an Executive Assistant at the U.S. Supreme Court, where she previously served as an intern during her undergraduate career at Clemson.
They talked to Honors students about their Supreme Court experiences and law school - and also shared insightful advice about imposter syndrome and being open to career opportunities that may take you down different paths than you had originally planned.
Honors students are encouraged to watch for upcoming monthly Alumni Speaker Series events in the weekly Honors College newsletter!
