The IAA is pleased to announce our new Director and Principal Lecturer, Dr. Heather McHale! She joined the IAA faculty in 2018; she has been at the University of Maryland since 2002. 🐢
In this role, she plans to expand upon the outreach that the IAA has been doing with 4-H, FFA, and Maryland high school agriculture programs. She aims to strengthen the partnership with Dining Services to reduce food insecurity on campus and increase opportunities for students to become involved in those efforts. She will also look to develop a more formal network of alumni and other industry partners to investigate employer needs to make sure students are equipped with the most relevant and in-demand skills.
Have you been to the campus farm recently? It’s busy with newly born foals and Maryland Day preparations 🐴 🐽 🐮

The IAA kicked off its annual series of lectures on sustainable food systems on Tuesday with a talk on cultural and ethnic crops.
When a migrant leaves their home, they cannot bring food with them, according to lecturer Nadine Burton, a farm management specialist at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. The lecture touched on how many migrants also struggle with food insecurity and discussed how growing ethnic crops can help provide migrants with ingredients for cultural recipes.
“We have our music, we take our religion, we take our fashion, we take all of that, but we cannot take our food,” Burton said. Growing ethnic crops in the United States can create a market for small farmers to provide food to migrants, Burton said.
