Incumbent Governor Mike Parson (R) is not running again. One of the nine is Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, who joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." One of the biggest issues he emphasized on-air is properly funding Missouri's seven state veterans homes. They are in Cameron, Cape Girardeau, Mexico, Mount Vernon, St. James, St. Louis, and Warrensburg. Secretary Ashcroft tells listeners those veterans homes are underfunded by tens of millions of dollars and that one could potentially close, without additional money. Mr. Ashcroft tells listeners that Missouri does not have a resource problem (money), it has a spending problem. Secretary of State Ashcroft says Missouri's approximately $50-billion state operating budget has increased by more than $20-billion in the past seven years, while the veterans homes are underfunded. He says the veterans homes need anywhere from $30-million to $50-million to be property funded, saying that will be a top priority if elected. Ashcroft also blasted a GOP primary rival during the live interview, saying Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe's budget has increased by tens of millions of dollars. Ashcroft says money should be taken by Kehoe's office and put toward state veterans homes. Another issue Ashcroft addressed is education, saying less than 25 percent of Missouri eighth-graders are proficient in both math and reading. Secretary Ashcroft also tells listeners that state government needs a reorganization. More than 14,000 state employees work in Cole County, making state government Jefferson City's largest employer:

Senator Eigel also tells listeners that he will unite the Missouri Republican Party, if he's elected. The "Missouri Independent" is reporting that a political action committee connected to Missouri Senate Majority Leader Cindy O'Laughlin (R-Shelbina) is working to stop Senator Eigel from becoming governor. The "Independent" says the NEMO Leadership PAC, which was created to support O'Laughlin, contributed $100,000 on July 5 to the Great Northwest PAC, which supports state Sen. Rusty Black (R-Chillicothe). The newspaper says that four days later, Great Northwest PAC purchased six direct mail pieces targeting Senator Eigel, at a cost of $100,000. Senator Eigel tells "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" that that money should have been used to help GOP state senate candidates in the general election. Senator Eigel also criticized his two main GOP rivals, Lt. Governor Mike Kehoe and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, during the live interview:

Some Democratic state lawmakers say it wasn't a defunding but was rather a reallocation of the funding. Senator Luetkemeyer disagrees, telling listeners he doesn't want Kansas City to become another Seattle or Portland. He also says a vote for Amendment Four supports the men and women in blue. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas (D) opposes Amendment four, saying KCPD's budget has increased since he became mayor. United Community Cathedral Bishop Damian Dean appears on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" | United Community Builders is currently building a multi-million dollar community center in northeast Columbia called the Beacon of Light. It will be about 22,000 square feet, once it's completed. Bishop Damian Dean with United Community Cathedral joined host Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday morning on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable." United Community Cathedral is building the community center near Towne drive in northeast Columbia's Whitegate neighborhood, which has high poverty. United Community Cathedral's website says the neighborhood "is known for its high crime and poverty rates and the low academic achievement of its kindergarten through 12th grade students." Bishop Dean grew up in north St. Louis and came to Columbia to attend college at Mizzou. United Community Cathedral is more than 50 years old. Bishop Dean tells listeners that the church aims to get people out of poverty and to help them find their purpose. He says the church wants to meet the needs of the community. Another priority for Bishop Dean involves respect: he tells listeners that the Columbia community must address the level of respect for authority. He says when you bring back respect, you bring back dignity. Bishop Dean emphasizes the importance of integrity, honesty and a work ethic. He also says it's important to take the church outside into the community. The Whitegate neighborhood has a lot of children. During a recent visit, Bishop Dean counted 42 children playing in the street. That's because there is no playground for about two miles. He says the Beacon of Light Community Center that's about to become a reality will improve safety and benefit the entire town. Central Bank, Shelter Insurance, Columbia Insurance Group, former Mizzou football coach Gary Pinkel's GP MADE Foundation and former Mizzou basketball star Laurence Bowers and his family are just a few of the many people and companies who have donated to the project. United Community Cathedral is still accepting donations:

Representative Schwadron tells listeners that some non-citizens have been registered to vote, including through the federal Motor Voter bill. It's officially known as the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 and was signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton (D). Missouri House Republicans have been advocating for legislation asking voters to ban non-citizens from voting, but Democrats like former State Rep. Chris Kelly (D-Columbia) say the law already prohibits this. Former Representative Kelly notes the Missouri Constitution says voters must be citizens. But Representative Schwadron says it reads that all citizens are eligible to vote. He wants that changed to read that only citizens are eligible to vote. He wants to change the word "all" to "only" and is optimistic you'll be voting on the ballot measure in November across Missouri:
