Good afternoon! Please check on your family and friends over the next few days. Please make sure you have access to heat. Collect food that will be easy to fix should the power go out. Check your medications to confirm you have enough to get you through this week.

TUESDAY NIGHT/WEDNESDAY MORNING: The precipitation should end Tuesday early afternoon with cold air moving in behind it. Temperatures will drop quickly with wind chill values in the teens before midnight. Wind chill values will be in the single digits for several hours Tuesday morning, finally warming into the upper 20s by late morning.

With these dangerously low wind chill values, check on family and friends and make sure they can be in a place they can be warm. Bring pets inside. Check on large animals. Wear proper clothing. Know signs of hypothermia. Make sure any space heaters have several feet of space surrounding the heater. Don't sit in a car with the heat running for several hours. Don't run a generator inside. Stay safe in this cold!

Good afternoon Shelby County. Just wanted to pass along a weather update for the upcoming potential weather events. Please see the post below from the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

Ok, listen up folks. The next 6-7 days are gonna be quintessential Alabama weather, and a perfect example of why we must ALWAYS be prepared for anything here in the South. Some significant changes have been made to the Friday severe threat. We're gonna try to hit the high points...impacts and preparedness actions. So, let's get to it...

WIND
What: Sustained winds of 15-30mpn with gusts up to 50mph OUTSIDE of thunderstorms
When: Friday
Where: All of Central AL
Impacts: downed trees, power outages, travel concerns for high-profile vehicles
Preparedness Actions: Secure any loose outdoor items. Have a backup power supply. Travel with caution.
NOTE: With recent heavy rains, it likely won't take much to down weakened trees.

SEVERE
What: Damaging winds up to 70mph, tornado possible, large hail
When: Friday 8am-4pm
Where: All of Central AL, highest west
Impacts: possible structural damage
Preparedness Actions: Get your emergency plan & safety kit ready to go. Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Know where your safe place is! Share important weather info with family/friends.
NOTE: We know this is a big change from this AM. Latest trends show a higher damaging wind threat as the system moves across MS into west AL. The tornado threat appears lower.

What: Wintry mix possible
When: Mon and Monday night
Where: Much of Central AL, best chance NW
Impacts: icy spots on roadways, impacts to travel possible (mainly NW), some light snow accumulations possible NW
Preparedness Actions: If you have travel plans during this time, please check back frequently for forecast updates/changes.
NOTE: This is an evolving situation. Forecast amounts could change.
COLD
What: Prolonged cold snap (lows in the 10s/20s, highs in the 20s/30s) Temps in the N may not rise above freezing on Tue.
When: Mon - Wed (coldest is Tue)
Where: All of Central AL
Impacts: potential for burst pipes, health concerns
Preparedness Actions: Cover exposed pipes. Consider letting faucets drip, Bring pets indoors, Arrange for emergency heat in case of power failure. Check on neighbors/elderly to ensure they have a reliable heat source. Heat your home safely!
NOTE: Feels-like temps could be in the single digits Tuesday night.
We'll be able to give more details on the winter impacts for next week after we get through tomorrow's severe weather event.

PLEASE BE SAFE AND CHECK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS!

Why I chose EMS: Hennigan chose EMS to help people, and this field is more fast-paced than his previous career path of athletic training.

So now that you got to know a little bit about Hennigan, make sure you say hi when you see him around.

Happy Monday!!

You may see our post with photos of the staff, you may even see the crews out and about in the community. We feel it’s time you get to actually know the crew members.

So we are introducing employee Mondays!

Name: Seamus O’Doherty
Hometown: Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Joined: December 2020
Position: Paramedic

Short Bio: Seamus was born in Portland, Maine. After living in Maine for a short time, we moved to New York. After that we moved to Alabama because my father’s company was acquired by a company based locally. We lived in Chelsea during my high school years where I attended John Carrol Catholic High School. After I graduated, I became an insurance agent for All-State. This is when I acquired a customer that was a battalion chief for Hoover Fire. He offered me a job if I went to Paramedic school. While I was attending my EMT Basic classes, I began work for RPS. I met my (now) wife. After 2 years of working together, we both left RPS. She now works for SBMC as a technician and I work for Southeast Shelby Rescue as a Paramedic.

Why I chose EMS: I felt a sense of duty to my community. Most of my family are in healthcare, to me this field is the blue collar version of healthcare.

Hobbies: When Seamus is not at the rescue, he enjoys making mead, fishing, and shooting.

So now that you got to know a little bit about Seamus, make sure you say hi when you see him around.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Being part of this great community is not just about serving our citizens in need, it’s also about reaching out to everyone in our community!

It's important that community leaders and adults know about what we do. It is just as important to make sure that the youngest members of our community know who we are, as well!

For children, it can be scary for a truck with a lot of lights to pull up in front of your house, adding complete strangers coming out of that truck. As you may have noticed, we participate in community events. We LOVE seeing the kids stop by and look at our trucks.

It doesn’t matter what role you have in our community, we always welcome questions, say hello to our crews, or call and schedule a tour of the station.

Almost all of our staff live within the community and we care what happens to our citizens. This is why we strive to provide the most professional and compassionate care possible!

Southeast Shelby Rescue wishes you a great week!
