Law enforcement warns of unseen danger on water during Fourth of July Plenty of people will be out on the water this Fourth of July weekend. We're tracking a warning from law enforcement about an unseen danger on the water. We're talking about carbon monoxide -- you can't see, smell or taste it.
🌊🚤 Stay Safe on the Water this Fourth of July! 🚤🌊
As we gear up for a fun-filled Fourth of July weekend, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is reminding everyone to stay safe by boating sober.
Joining the nationwide "Operation Dry Water" initiative, ODNR aims to educate boaters about the dangers of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs to reduce incidents and fatalities on our beautiful waterways.
From July 4 to 6, Operation Dry Water weekend will feature intensified efforts to spread the word about safe boating practices and enforce laws against boating under the influence (BUI).
BUI is the leading cause of recreational boating deaths and injuries. In 2023, alcohol was involved in four boating accidents in Ohio, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. ODNR urges all boaters to prioritize safety by boating sober, always wearing a life jacket, and knowing Ohio’s boating laws. 🦺
During Operation Dry Water weekend, safety advocates, volunteers, and law enforcement will be out in full force, educating boaters and removing impaired operators from the water. Last year, 717 impaired operators were removed from our nation’s waterways during this campaign.
Remember: Alcohol poses a risk for both operators and passengers. Choose to boat sober this July 4th weekend and keep our waterways safe for everyone. 🌟
Learn more at operationdrywater.org. Stay safe, boat sober, keep what matters afloat by always wearing a life jacket, and have a fantastic Fourth of July! 🚤✨

As summer approaches, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is participating in National Safe Boating Week from May 18-24. Safety on the water is a must, and wearing a life jacket can save lives!
"Whether you're a seasoned boater or new to the water, safety must always be a top priority,” says ODNR Director Mary Mertz. "By taking simple precautions and brushing up on boating safety skills, we can ensure that every outing on the water remains enjoyable and safe for all."
📊 Did you know? According to the U.S. Coast Guard, 85% of drowning victims in boating accidents last year weren't wearing life jackets. In Ohio alone, all 10 boating fatalities in 2023 were due to drowning, and none of the victims were wearing life jackets.
Today's life jackets are more comfortable, stylish, and mobile than ever before. They're essential for all water activities! 🚤💧
Boating Safety Tips from ODNR and the National Safe Boating Council:
• Always wear a life jacket and ensure everyone onboard does the same.
• Take a boating safety course to sharpen your skills.
• Carry and regularly check required safety equipment.
• File a float plan with your trip details and passenger info.
• Check weather and water conditions before heading out.
• Boat sober and be mindful of others on the water.
• Use engine cut-off devices to prevent accidents.
• Review Ohio's boating laws with the Ohio Boat Operator's Guide.

Last week, several of our Natural Resources Officers participated in the 2024 Great Lakes Regional Marine Fire Fighting exercise. Teaming up with members of the United States Coast Guard, Key Lakes, Inc, Toledo, Oregon, and Jerusalem Township Fire Departments, we simulated a fire emergency aboard the lake freighter Philip R. Clarke. This joint effort is crucial for enhancing our preparedness on the Great Lakes, ensuring we're equipped to prevent, respond to, and recover from vessel fires effectively. Together, we're safeguarding our precious waterways and the communities that rely on them.
Don't forget – it's the law for boat operators, born on or after January 1st, 1982 who are operating vessels over 10 horsepower to meet the Ohio Boater Education requirements.
Whether you're a seasoned captain or just starting out, taking a boating education course helps ensure safe waters for everyone.
