Congratulations scholars !!

Brutus Buckeye was on hand Friday to welcome 155 incoming 9th-graders from nine cities across Ohio to the Young Scholars Program (YSP) at the Ohio Union.

Chosen from among 1,000 applicants, the 155 newest Young Scholars from the nine largest urban school districts in Ohio must meet academic and service-learning requirements throughout high school to earn scholarships to the Columbus campus. They spent the day on campus with their parents or guardians getting an overview of the YSP program, hearing from selected speakers, and touring the university.

Tiffany Payiavlas, YSP program manager in Youngstown, said the orientation session was the first time for many of the students to leave their hometowns. "The purpose of today is not only orientation but also celebrating that they will be the first in their families to attend not only college but to go to Ohio State," she said.

Anderson Agustin, a rising freshman at John Hay High School in Cleveland, said it was exciting to visit Ohio State and think about one day being a Buckeye student. "In high school, I'm going to focus on science," he said. "Someday, I want to be a neurosurgeon."

Calling All Alumni and Community Members:

Hello, my name is Lisa A. Gissendaner (Ms. G), and I serve as the Program Coordinator for The Ohio State University, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Young Scholars Program (YSP) – Canton Office. As the program is celebrating its 35th year, I challenge all alumni and community members from the "Hall of Fame City" to give to the 2024 Buckeye Funder YSP City Challenge. Your generous support will provide scholarships and services to our district's first-generation students or qualifying students.

Scholars who sit in a seat you once held sit with the hope and anticipation that they, too, will receive a generous financial need-based scholarship to pursue their higher education at The Ohio State University as a proud member of the Young Scholars Program. The challenge is set. The call to action now rests with each one of you.

Let us continue to grow this college access program, support our district and most importantly, show our scholars that we value their desire to pursue higher education. LET'S GO "Hall of Fame City"! Let us meet and exceed this call.
