Find hundreds of free videos of ASL retellings of your child’s favorite books on our site. Research shows that reading and signing stories together helps promote essential literacy skills for ALL children: deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing.

We add new signed stories to the ASL Stories Directory each week. If you have a favorite video not listed here or you want to add your video of you and your child signing one of your favorite books, please share it with Cheri at [email protected]. Thank you.

Here's a fun thing: There is now a Chrome extension that provides ASL Interpreting for movies on DisneyPlus and Netflix. It's called "SignUp Captions" and it's free. The interpreters are Deaf actors/entertainers. They are constantly expanding their library and you can even request a movie that isn't there yet. There are about 60 movies available so far, including Coco, The Incredibles, Black Panther, Frozen, Up, Zootopia, and more.
Here's a link to their page on the chrome web store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/signup-sign-language-for/gbllbjbhbafgdcolenjhdoabdjjbjoom

In celebrating the Women's History Month - let's honor Dorothy S. Casterline.

Dorothy S. Casterline - Linguist, Writer and Teacher and Pioneer of ASL

Dorothy Sueoka Casterline - a Deaf Asian woman from Honolulu, Hawaii, graduated from Hawaii School for the Deaf and Blind, then enrolled Gallaudet University, received Bachelor's in English (1958). She was known for pioneering in the field of American Sign Language. She was recruited by William C. Stokoe in 1957 and began to study Deaf people using Sign Language in the research laboratory with Deaf colleague, Carl G. Croneberg. She typed many letters for William C. Stokoe from 1957-1964. She had a sharp eye for details and she transcribed the signs. She's also a writer of the publication of the history-making "A Dictionary of American Sign Language on Linguistic Principles" in 1965 with Carl G. Croneberg and William C. Stokoe. The dictionary was the book that grabbed people's attention and flared a growing interest in ASL.

Repost from

To celebrate International Women’s Day today, and Women History Month, we wanted to shine the spotlight on a remarkable woman who is an agent of change in the Deaf community: our very own muse, Melissa “Mez” Malzkuhn!

Melissa has many layers: she is a tireless advocate, lifelong learner, a wife, a mom of two young children, an artist, a small business owner… and a fearless leader charging in uncharted territory, paving the way with courage and kindness. She is descended from a long line of talented Deaf storytellers and sign language advocates. Her grandfather Eric “Malz” Malzkuhn was the first Deaf person to sign the ‘Jabberwocky’ professionally.

Melissa grew up surrounded by Deaf role models and had total immersion in bilingualism (American Sign Language and written English) from birth. Melissa’s upbringing nurtured the guiding principles of her community activism: the way she grew up is an exception, but it shouldn’t have to be. Instead of a tiny portion of Deaf children worldwide receiving access to language, it should be every single Deaf child. Ending language deprivation worldwide is something Melissa strongly believes in and strives to do with every fiber of her being.

Melissa is the founder and director of Motion Light Lab (we may be teensy bit biased, but it is an extraordinary space!) In fact, she was one of the four original founding members of Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2) at Gallaudet University, along with Dr. Laura-Ann Pettito, Dr. Tom Allen, and Dr. Melissa Herzig.

Melissa’s visionary ways propel growth in our Deaf community both locally and internationally. She pushes for sign language rights for Deaf people all over the world in a variety of ways: creating opportunities for Deaf representation, skillset building, and resource sharing.

She presents at conferences that cater to global audiences such as TedX, Crip the Metaverse, and World Federation of the Deaf about sign language accessibility and technology. She spearheads an initiative called CoLabs with the aim of creating bilingual storybooks for all ages. CoLabs has worked with 10+ countries to date, with more in the wings.
