You've been a part of IPR since day 1 and your enthusiasm, commitment, and kindness made the center what it is today. You made everyone's days brighter and your presence is going to be missed. Congratulations to IPR graduate student affiliate Natalia Zotova, from Anthropology, on being awarded the OSU Presidential Fellowship. In her research of “immigration, stress, and mental health among Central Asian Muslim immigrants in a comparative perspective,” Natalia explores how complex economic, legal, and social vulnerabilities affect mental health and well-being of recent Central Asian Muslim immigrants to the US. Natalia conceptualizes immigration as a complex cultural and biological adaptation to a new setting and identifies different factors that influence health outcomes. Employing a biocultural approach and critical medical anthropology, Natalia notes complex relationships between the social structure, culture, and biology as they influence well-being and mental health.

Jasmine Whiteside, current IPR affiliate and student at Ohio State, pursuing her doctorate in sociology, has an amazing story to share. Whiteside joined Brain on Fire author Susannah Cahalan at the University of Southern Mississippi for a unique edition of the school’s University Forum Sept. 18, featuring both discussing their battle with a rare disease, anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. “The focus of this forum is one disease, one disaster in one’s life, but even a lot of people can wind up being misunderstood, or hit roadblocks without having a disease like this,” Whiteside said. “This is an opportunity to hear from us, and give USM students a chance to reflect, that if I can overcome this, then they can overcome whatever hurdles they may be facing.” Both women shared their stories and their insight on how to overcome such a life altering disease. The University Forum event was the first time for Cahalan to be paired at a speaking engagement with someone like Whiteside who had the same disease and faced similar challenges. Both women are a true inspiration.
