Columbus AIDS activist Steve Shellabarger still fighting 43 years after epidemic began 12/01/2023

Today is World AIDS Day. The first World AIDS Day took place in 1988, providing a platform to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and honor the lives affected by the epidemic. This year marks the 35th commemoration of this important day. This year’s theme“World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit.”

The Columbus Dispatch has been running stories all week about the history of the fight against AIDS in Central Ohio and the work that is currently being done. One of these stories profiled our 2012 Legacy Honors Honoree Steven Shellabarger. This event was more than a ceremony; it's a testament to the power of community spirit, and a celebration of the progress we've made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in Central Ohio.

The Legacy Fund of the Columbus Foundation

The Legacy Fund of The Columbus Foundation awards grants to organizations and individuals to support equality and empowerment of individuals in Central Ohio's LGBT community. Our board is comprised of volunteers who work together to steward funds contributed directly and through legacy giving and charitable estate planning. We exist to support organizations in the Central Ohio community that grow and foster LGBT equality for now and for the future.
