Eating disorders have been associated with high rates of substance use, more specifically, to***co use. A recent study asked young adults aged 18-24 who self-reported exclusive e-cigarette use, use of both ci******es and e-ci******es, or nonuse of these to complete a questionnaire that assessed body dissatisfaction and other eating disorder diagnostic information. Findings suggest that young adults with symptoms of an eating disorder are more likely to be users of e-ci******es and ci******es than their peers without these symptoms.

A history of childhood trauma has been linked to increased risk for alcohol misuse in early adulthood. College students are a high-risk population for alcohol misuse and related consequences. Online surveys completed by college students in Western France were used to measure severity/type of childhood trauma and assess alcohol misuse. After reviewing 1180 responses, findings suggest that childhood trauma exposure and minimization of these events may specifically be related to increased risk of greater alcohol misuse among college students.

Recent evidence suggests that when compared to alcohol use only, substance co-use may be more closely associated with negative reinforcement processes and more likely to occur during periods of increased stress. A recent study of 1,461 college students who had consumed alcohol within the last 30 days and had no history of receiving treatment for their alcohol use examined students drinking motives, interpersonal stress, and daily substance use. This study found that students with higher levels of drinking to cope were more likely to engage in alcohol and multiple substance use.

A recent study recruited and implemented a survey to 435 students from Collegiate Recovery Programs across the U.S. The purpose of the survey was to examine legal system involvement association with substance use, recovery, and academic-related outcomes among college students in recovery from substance use and behavioral disorders. Results indicate that there is a significant difference between students who are system-involved and students who are not. These findings suggest that stakeholders in higher education organizations may propose implementing trainings that increase understanding about these students in CRPs and how their needs may differ.

In comparison to non-college adolescents, college students have a greater prevalence of alcohol use and alcohol use disorders. Factors such as alcohol marketing, emotional vulnerability, and peer influence may contribute to the greater prevalence. A comprehensive review of external factors that contribute to substance misuse among university students found that students who engage in heavy episodic drinking had higher rates of health risks, negative mental health consequences, and alcohol-related problems. Environmental strategies, educational measures, and early intervention techniques can provide a framework to monitor these conditions.
