🤩👉CRC is excited to bring back our "fundraiser in a box" initiative. While we will happily accept donations throughout the month of August, we wanted to give YOU a chance to engage with friends, family members, and neighbors to raise awareness and funds towards our August Ask goal of $50,600.

1. Pick-Up your box - All throughout August, Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm
CRC Administrative Building📦
3222 N High St, Columbus, OH 43202

2.💞 Choose your own financial Goal - You are not required to raise a certain amount. Some suggested amounts could be the amount it takes to fund one full day for the food pantry ($1,012) or even a half day ($506). $50,600 might seem like a big goal to commit to. However, if you break down that goal and get 51 people to donate no more than $10, you're done!
***Whether your fundraiser in a box goal is a dollar, a whole day to fund the pantry, or more – your participation means everything to us!

3. ✨Choose your own adventure - Every box is full of CRC information, ideas for inspiration, and some self-care goodies to thank you for caring for our neighbors through your support. THEN, venture off into your community (or digital platform) to support food security through CRC's Choice Food Pantry!

4. Turn in your box! - At the end of the month, we will be counting up all the funds raised by fundraisers in a box. Please make sure to turn in your box at our admin building (3222 N High St.) before 4pm on August 30th so we can get an accurate final count. 🌞

Thank you again for your willingness to support our campaign in a this special way!

Join Pastor Kristen Lawson at the
9 AM and 10:30 AM worship as Kristen continues the sermon series, Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors with the message, The Word focusing on 2 Samuel 11:26-12:13. This is the story of Nathan and David. Scripture cannot be understood or experienced as it was intended in isolation, it requires the community of faith to be understood, expressed, and applied. God’s Word proclaimed in the community is always meant to be a catalyst of communal and individual change. Understanding God's word is good, but being transformed by it is better.

We will celebrate the sacrament of communion. All our welcome to the table. If you are worshipping with us online, we invite you to have your communion elements ready. Anything you have on hand will be perfect.

The communion offering will be for our missional partner New Life Community Outreach.

As we continued with the Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds sermon series, we focused this Sunday on the Call to Worship.

We all yearn to be in the presence of the Divine, to touch the cloak of Jesus as today’s scripture described it. When we are separated from God, we notice it at some level. We are called to worship, to ministry, to touch the cloak of Jesus, in order to be in connection with God’s love, so that we can take a bit of this love into the world and be, for others, that connection that they wouldn’t otherwise feel.

🎶Today, folks were called to the Pop Up Choir to share their gift of music.

🎉We also celebrated Leslie Jackson’s many years of ministry with the altar guild, missions, choir, garden ministry and many others. She said, "I am a little bit humbled, because any one of you could be up here doing the same thing. I am just one of many who say yes when asked."

❓How will you be called to worship?

Monday’s Moment from Sunday’s Sermon with Pastor Marcus Atha….

A given meaning is when you realize you’ve been called by God to be in this world for care, love and relationship. This meaning is God introducing you to what’s most important in your life. A life that has purpose. We all want a life with meaning. Don’t we? We don’t want to leave everything to chance.

Marcus asked us if we had seen the musical Hamilton and left us with this quote to ponder as we are called to take a stand. “If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?” Alexander Hamilton

Join us for our summer Pop Up Bell Choir this Sunday. Interested in playing? Meet Colin Knoth, our Music Director in the sanctuary at 8 AM.

📖 The Scripture for Sunday reminds me of the famous line in “Hamilton”, he says to Aaron Burr, “If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?” it also reminds me of Mary Oliver’s famous line in one of her poems, “Tell me what is your plan to do with this one wild and precious life?” Jesus teaches us to live for something real.

Pastor Marcus Atha will continue the sermon series Open Hearts, Open Minds and Open Doors: Hospitality-Gathering, focusing on Mark 16:14-29

Thank you, Sybil Baker for the gift of your musical talent today. Sybil played cello on Sunday, July 7th, for 6 different places in the Order of Service (prelude, special music, postlude for both services). Accompanied by our wonderful organist/pianist, Cecilia Sekong, this instrumental music became a celebration of worship.

Babies! NBUMC was blessed by the Sacrament of Baptism for three special little ones at the 10:30 service today. One way Baptism is described in our denominational Book of Worship is that it "anticipates a lifetime of further and deeper experiences of God, further acts of Christian commitment, and ministries in the world." These 3 little ones are recognized at part of the 'big us,' the church that is NBUMC. Thank you, church, for your welcoming of little ones, who run and laugh in the halls and spaces, roll down ramps, hide in cubbies, sing, make crafts, and (occasionally) ask you questions that make you worry that you gave a suitable answer. Watch the video clip or the archived live stream to hear a bit of what Pastor Marcus tells us as he, Pastor Kristen, and Gail walked with the little ones.

In Sunday's service, Pastor Kristen and both youth and adult members of the 2024 Work Camp team shared experiences from the week. You can find their testimonials to the congregation on the NBUMC archived livestream. A video shared from 3 members of the team is here, as well. During the service, Ed Smith shared some MoTown music like that experienced by the team while in Detroit. Thanks be to God for their work with Metropolitan Mission, 1500 bulbs of garlic, a porch fixed, hearts touched, and a safe journey home to tell their stories. Thank you for your support of the youth and Work Camp.

Hearts are full today. This morning, our liturgists shared the story of the blind man who would not be silenced when he had the opportunity to meet Jesus (Luke 18:35-43) to ask to see again. Our children were given noisemakers (Pastor Kristen says "sorry, parents and grandparents") because we always have Jesus' attention and it doesn't hurt to make a little noise. In his message to the church in the room and online, Chris T Rehs-Dupin shared that his child has the confidence to take up more space than a parent might think necessary, which is right in line with the Gospel story today (and Kristen's noisemakers). Chris also shared his experience and his struggles as a trans person living with and within the church. Finally, Kelly Kristine Sullivan and Mariann Bishop Brush, backed by two other choir members, shared the moving piece, "Plowshare Prayer". Led by these example acts of speaking out in word, noise, and song, the Gospel was lived out today, for a time, in our space. And in the words of the song:

I pray if a prayer has been used as a sword
Against you & your heart
Against you & your word
I pray that this prayer is a plowshare of sorts
That it might break you open
It might help you grow

Please give a warm welcome to Chris Rehs-Dupin who will give the message, Lord I Want to See focusing on Luke 18: 35-43 at the 9AM & 10:30AM worship service.

Chris has been a long-time member of North Broadway UMC and Short North Church along with Amy, his wife, and two children. Chris Rehs-Dupin doesn't shy away from hard topics, hard feelings, or neighborhood cults. With a patterned shirt collection bigger than a camp costume closet, Chris excels at meeting people where they are in a fun, engaging, and impactful way. Chris co-founded Transplaining in (2020), which evolved into Transplaining for Camps (2023), and Founder and Co-Executive of TQAMO (2024).

Just as Samuel answered God, Here I am, Lord, so did Rev. Kristen Lawson and Rev. Valerie Bridgeman. Both took a different path to their call to christian ministry and both had a long journey with many detours along the way. They persevered, prayed and never gave up and now they are living out the gospel of God’s love.

While they may be ordained in the call to discipleship, during the Sunday message they asked the question…..Where might God be inviting you to serve?

Let’s congratulate them on their accomplishments and celebrate their ministry as well as the graduation of Ava Feller, from Whetstone High School and all high school and college graduates.

In today’s Trinity Sunday message, Pastor Marcus said that the concept of the Trinity is as if the math statement, 1 + 1 + 1 = 1, was easy to understand. Math is the wrong language for what we theologically claim of the being of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Yet, words don’t easily do it, either. The Gospels and the Epistles don’t explicitly talk about the Trinity. The Nicean Creed, the second oldest creed in our tradition, can be found in the United Methodist Hymnal (UMH 880) and on the denominational web site at:

https://www.umc.org/en/content/glossary-nicene-creed

It was the beginning of understanding, and it was in the 3rd century of the Common Era. Aren’t you glad that you weren’t an early church leader responsible for explaining the triune nature of God?

The Trinity is a Holy Mystery, not easy to explain, but easy (in a way) to experience in the moment. Using the words of Barbara Brown Taylor, Pastor Marcus said that God is sometimes experienced by us a judge pointing out our shortcomings, sometimes as a shepherd leading and caring, sometimes as a protector or a monarch or a teacher or a helper. Different experiences, but one God.

Church doctrine like the Trinity can be a weighty thing. Know that in our faith community, the relationship with God through the people whom God loves, doctrine undergirds but the community is where things get real. In good times and in painful situations, opening up hearts and hands to be instruments of God’s love and justice is where we put Holy Mysteries into action. Thank you for being the church.

You never know what can happen at church when God is present! God brings energy to the gathered group, both in the Acts scripture lesson and for those gathered in the NBUMC community on Sunday. The Chancel and handbell choirs gifted us with wonderful music. Cecelia and Jayne played a duet. Energy was present. But, this energy didn’t come out of the frenzy of worry or frantic action, even if our musicians may have experienced a bit in their preparations. Rather, like an example Pastor Marcus gave from Melville’s Moby Dick, the energy was produced out of preceding idle calm when the time was near. When we come to the mission of the church from an attitude of prayerful calm, we can best be part of whatever God is unfolding before us. Even if it is, as the Disciples experienced, a bit of holy chaos in the rush of a mighty wind.

🎈🎉Happy birthday, church.
