Ismail Uluer is a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering, who transferred to Oregon State University when his advisor, Tom Weller, became the EECS school head.
Ismail's research involves designing a antenna to assist a special technique developed for cancerous treatment by heating tumors with microwave energy. This technique may allow doctors to treat tumors by inserting a gene into the patient’s cells instead of using drugs or surgery.
Following graduation, Ismail plans to pursue a career in academia because he enjoys being in the research environment and contributing to technology development.
"I use a lot of humor in my class, normally, and I’m a little quirky, and I think that humor helps disarm the students on certain dimensions like nerves and apprehension," said OSU-Cascades professor Patrick Donnelly. But he's very serious about teaching computer science.

Ali Haider, a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering with a focus on energy systems, says he was born to be an electrical engineer. "It’s like a painter never becomes interested in painting at a certain stage in life, rather their art was always in them," he said.
He is thankful for the dedicated faculty at Oregon State University, especially his supervisor, Professor Ted Brekken, who "certainly knows how to be a teacher and bring out students’ hidden talents."
Ali is working to design electrical engineering systems to extract optimum power from ocean waves, and to design power electronics interface systems to integrate this power with the utility power grid. After he graduates, he will be going on to a postdoc position with Berkeley Lab.
